« on: 04 October 2014, 19:03 »
Had this golf over 4 yrs and only just noticed today a swtich inside the filler neck,it gets pressed when the cap goes on,theres a wire next to it on the outside of the neck that has corroded off,is this switch supposed to cut the engine/bring light on if the cap is removed while still running

That "switch" is the nipple for the tank vent.... push it with you finger while filling and you can fill the expansion tank as well (i.e. squeeze more fuel in before a long journey).

I would think the wire that has corroded off is the grounding strip.

I wouldn't recomend to fill it all the way up. When it cuts it's enough. Maybe in cold weather is isnt as dangerous as in varm weather, but as i said, when it cuts it cuts for a reason.

There's a lot of safety with petrol tanks; in cold weather and if you immediately fire it out the back (on long journey) it's not dangerous; fill it up with cold petrol in Turkey in the summer when it goes over 40 degrees air temp then it may go pop thou without the expansion tank.

Had about 70-75l total in my supposed 60l tank in my AAM estate :D

No expansion tank on mine! Just the tank and the filler neck!
