What's wrong with my KR
« on: 16 September 2014, 17:20 »
Done a full engine rebuild on my golf but can't get it to run properly. When I bought it the car had been unused for 6 years. There was no compression on 2 cylinders.  That's all sorted now but when it starts it cuts out 2-3 seconds later . If you mess about trying and trying eventually it will run and warm up. When it was warm I set the ignition timing with the red lead disconnected from coil and it was ok idled a little low at 700 rpm but would run and rev all be it lumpy. I have replaced spark plugs dizzy cap and rotar and leads, the fuel system is untouched other than altering mixture to try get it going.  Fuel pump runs and have tested each injector and each delivers fuel. I have Bosch FR6 DC + supplied by euro car parts on the reg and that's what I took out  the Haynes suggested Bosch FR56 plugs. Any ideas what's wrong with it as have spent a fortune rebuilding engine and need it to run!!

on cold start the cold start injector should run for up to 10secs to give that initial enrichment for starting, once running then its the warm up regulator that takes over enrichment until engine is warm. if its been unsed for 6yrs then the possibility is there is gunk in the fuel injection system.
you will need a fuel pressure test gauge kit to properly check fuel pressures during start up and warm up, try this link for understanding kjet

try this as well

mechanical metering are not the most reliable things.  I reckon you will be spending some time and money with an expert to get it running well, if it's been apart and isn't running right.

Good luck!

The engines been fully rebuilt but fuel injection hasn't except new filter & fresh fuel. Can you convert the fuel system to different more reliable system?  Or does anyone know a K- jet specialist in a South Wales?

Not easily and no.  Sorry.

Ask on ClubGTI - there are some K-Jet lovers there.
