Original stereo
« on: 11 September 2005, 21:33 »
Not wanting to compete with all the modded cars, I thought it might be fun to keep mine as original as possible.  Anyone able to confirm the model of stereo fitted to the 1988 Mk2 GTi as standard?  I have heard rumours of Blaupunkt Melbourne, but there seem to be several of these.

Actually.  ;)  I've installed good (read stealth and tasteful) ICE in every car I've ever owned. (see http://www.antgel.co.uk/xjs/audio/index.shtml which I never finished off with front speaker install which was much more interesting)  Never felt the need for amps or subs though.  Usually a head unit and speaker upgrade suits me.

I've been in bands and played guitar for years.  In fact music is my number one passion.  I would bet that I love music more than 99% of people on here.

But with this car, there are so many modded ones that I thought it would be more interesting to keep it original like a time warp.  Although I am starting to think that perhaps an invisible front speaker upgrade and a good (but still retro) head unit e.g. Alpine 7618, could be a god compromise.

How about having the original headunit in the normal location but a cd headunit fitted elsewhere

hey, still got original stereo in mine (panasonic) and can pick up radio Luxembourg occasionally.... Wanting to keep my 1989 8v as standard as poss I use a belkin radio transmitter and my MP3 player I can listen to a choice selection of tracks, without changing CD's every ten minutes. Though its not the best sound quality I've ever experienced (only as good as FM) it's a good compromise.

and not 2 expensive....

Belkin truecast 2 transmitter - £25ish

fits to anything with audio jack plug connection e.g. CD player, MP3, IPOD

though the true music enthusiasts will probably scoff at the quality.

Like billy I have a 'period feature' Panasonic radio cassette in mine. I use a tape adapter to get mp3s from my phone.
Not sure of the model, but could get a pic up?
Not sure there was a 'standard' head unit, I though it was up to the individual dealer, not 100% sure though.
