Leak in my fuel tank :(
« on: 04 September 2014, 12:21 »
Are there any threads you know of showing how to replace the fuel tank in a AUM code? First glance seems like a pretty big undertaking! Any help would be appreciated. If anyone has a tank or knows of one in Scotland (Aberdeenshire to be specific) please give me a shout. Are the tanks model specific or are they same through the mk4's?
Thanks.

can't it be patched up? or is that not a good idea? obviously don't weld anywhere near it though.

I'm pretty sure its just held on with a metal strap in a recess, and that it attaches to the fuel pipe filler, never taken one off a golf but most other cars are like this too
ARZ K03s, Oettinger Side Skirts, R32 front, Carbon stage 2, Forge 007p (yellow spring), Forge Actuator (yellow spring), Pipercross panel filter with DSG parts, N249 and N112 deleted, SAI deleted, Carbon canister deleted, Rear wiper deleted, Long Life turbo back custom exhaust with 200 cell sports cat, VR6/G60 clutch kit, Creation Motorsport TIP, Catch can, 'Wellycooler', K04 charge pipe, S3 ported inlet manifold - looks pretty standard on the outside though :)

I did my tank on my old mk3 golf. DOn't tihnk there the same, however I don't think the process would differ.

You can do it yourself, however I would have 2 people as it makes it a bit easier. On the mk3, the filler neck was all one piece on the tank, so removed the straps and angled the filler neck with the tank out and it dropped.

I got my tank from my mate how does vw spares in Bonnybridge. He sold me a good tank from a vr6 for £40 as VW wanted hundreds of $$.  If it is close to you, I can check to see if he has a mk4 lying around.

Looks like it's was patched in the past And has come undone. Don't know if I want to try patching again? Guessing the tank would need to come out to make a proper job as the leak is on the underside and guessing the tank would need to be bone dry before any attempt to patch could be done?

Had a quick google and seems like the rear axle has to be dropped? Guessing it's not simply undoing the straps etc...

Sorry mate, I havn't done it on the mk4. However on the mk3 no axle had to be removed. The tank on the mk3 was rather large in area size and did not have alot of depth as I can recall.

No worries, I am just going to take it to a garage - made an enquiry at local and quoted £50-£60. Just need to source a tank now :) Is Bonnybridge down Glasgow way? If u could check or give me contact info for your mate, that would help.
Thanks
