Sid,

You can pay for VW to change it as a preventative measure.  The cost of having it done at a VW main dealer could, at face value, be significantly more than what you might pay at an independent specialist who would use the same parts and who should do the job equally as well.  Any contribution from VW might still result in a more expensive bill than a bill from an Indie so it's worth checking.  It's also worth asking VW if they will price match any quote you get from an Indie.

Warranty - Your car has a timing chain and not a timing belt or cam belt so always be clear and careful on the wording of a warranty, although the principles are similar.  I would double check that.  A VW warranty should cover timing chain tensioner failure and associated/ consequential damage.  If the timing chain service requirements are timing chain replacement at 100k miles and you are only on 53k miles then any warranty cover should be sound at this time, provided the warranty covers such component failures.

Thanks guys.

I'm off to see the dealer today but before I do, is there any mileage (excuse the pun) in pointing to the fact that they've released Service Bulletin's advising the part/s be changed to the newer revisions and would that help in negotiating that they change them?

...So I went to see the specialist dealer and he said the car sounded fine with no rattling etc. He viewed the service booklet and said everything had been done and as there was no sound, rattling or previous issues the tensioner was better left alone as changing it might have a detrimental knock on effect on other components.

Went to see the main dealer and they were as helpful as a chocolate teapot. Out of warranty and basically no known problem as no recall. Amazing.

Again, he advised to take a warranty for peace of mind but just to make sure it covered everything.
