Sid,
You can pay for VW to change it as a preventative measure. The cost of having it done at a VW main dealer could, at face value, be significantly more than what you might pay at an independent specialist who would use the same parts and who should do the job equally as well. Any contribution from VW might still result in a more expensive bill than a bill from an Indie so it's worth checking. It's also worth asking VW if they will price match any quote you get from an Indie.
Warranty - Your car has a timing chain and not a timing belt or cam belt so always be clear and careful on the wording of a warranty, although the principles are similar. I would double check that. A VW warranty should cover timing chain tensioner failure and associated/ consequential damage. If the timing chain service requirements are timing chain replacement at 100k miles and you are only on 53k miles then any warranty cover should be sound at this time, provided the warranty covers such component failures.
