Boot handle/badge
« on: 30 July 2014, 19:04 »
hey, just wondered if anyone else has had this problem as i think it might be a common one.

basically the vw badge that is the boot catch/handle has corroded (has a kind of white rust almost)

i've read elsewhere this can be replaced in 2 ways, either do the whole handle which will be a £120 part and the labour on top of that, or just replace the plastic badge part.

has anyone had this problem and solved it by just replacing the badge part (hopefully it will be a £20 part and a job i can do myself on the drive)

thanks in advance

Not so much had the usual "white worn" corrosion problem, but my girlfriend swapped just the badge on hers for a black one (opposed to the chrome one as standard). So yes, you can do it for £20, just really clean the surface before you replace a new badge.

interesting... went into vw today and they said it can't be done and needs to be the whole unit! any chance you could post a link to the badge she bought and how easy it was to replace?

thanks!

I think it depends on the type of boot badge. If you have a flat badge here is how to remove it

awesome, thanks for that link. managed to get the old badge off using the credit card technique (really did destroy it though so if anyone else is going to attempt it go for an old one!)

so, now i need to replace what i've taken off with a new one. anyone have a link to what i need? had a quick look on ebay and could only find ones for mk4s

have attached a couple of images of what i took off...

Look carefully on the rear and you'll find the VW part number. Use this in eBay or visit a main dealer to replace with a genuine item.

so the mk4 badge fits the early mk5 handle, i've bought one off the bay and stripped it down to 3 parts. i now need to attached the chrome vw part to the boot handle. has anyone else done this mod and what do you use to attach it?
