Evening all,

Right need some insight & help if possible from you Mk5 people in the know.

My misses and I have recently found out that a bundle of joy will be coming into our life around Feb and my R32 is not a family car and she hates infact we both Hate her Ford feista 1.4 tdci for alot of reasons, it may as well not have a turbo at all as it doe not feel like it has one when you plat your foot, it uses alot of oil and its only covered 57k!! it is a 5 door but by the time we get a pram in the back there is no room for anything else. and it has no ISO fix for the baby seat

Now most people might say "just use your R32" but truth is I may even come to a point where it will have to go if I cannot afford to run it once the babey is here...

Plus the misses needs her own car and the plan in to have a decent family car and hardly use the R32 (Mk4).

So, she quiet likes the Mk5 Golf now my cuz Had and my anty has the GT TDI 140. I have driven both of them and was extremely impressed by it, feels quick when you need it, solid and has great features including ISO fix.

In terms of our budget we have her car which 3 sep traders have offered us £3k which is terrible for a 2008 feista with full history imho however Its burning oil (about 3-4 litres every 5-6months), needs a tyre and the AC needs regassing, other than that its mint, the MOT is up end of this month which after a tyre it will fly though it but rather than spend £100+ on the MOT we have both decided its time to say goodbye and get something alittle more family friend and id much prefer my babey to be in a golf than a fiesta should the worst happen if you know what I mean.

So we got her car and £1500 to maybe at a hge massive push £2000 which puts us in the ball park of looking for a TDI between £4000-£5000.

Now I have been checking Auto trader and there are alot out there, you got the 75bhp models (which im thinking due to a heavy car may drink abit) the 105bhp then you hit the GT range with the 140 & 170bhp's. I have even been told there is a 115??

Honestly I don't think we need a GT but she does love the styling on the GT with the bumpers, door strips being colour coded etc.

We dont mind traveling upto and I mean MAX 60 miles from CF5.

Id personally like the car to have cruise control and climate but not essental but it must have 5 doors.

Anything you can reconmend for me guys? Im not cluded up on the TDI's and this needs to be a good example as its our family car any certain models we should stay away from? anything in particular to look out for when veiwing?

Sorry for he essay :)

3 flavours of diesel engine

1.9 105bhp
2.0 140
2.0 170

Avoid the low powered 1.4 and 1.6 engines

1.9's are generally robust and map to over 140bhp

The 140 suffers from chocolate turbos and EGR valve faults

The 170 suffers from DPF faults but is likely out of your budget

I had a 1.9 TDI SE, which had enough low down torque to make driving around town a breeze, and calm and quiet on the motorway. Being the SE model, it had all the toys (sat nav, heated seats and cruise control were my top 3 toys).

I could easily get 600 miles a take, my record was closer to 750 miles. I never taped the bonnet except once when it broke and on a return journey home I hit 84mpg.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Well things tend not to go wrong on the 1.9

Plus a cheeky remap gives it that extra fizz it needs

Go for a 140, budget for a new turbo and remove the EGR. If you like getting your hands dirty it won't cost you as much as you might think.

Down Hill From Here.
