Car broke down, fault code retrieved.
« on: 15 June 2014, 12:35 »
My V5 broke down on Friday. I have a VAG reader and a code 16706 was store something to do with the engine speed sensor ?

The symptoms were.
The first thing that happened was the EPC light came on and my revs altered.
Shortly afterwards the Check Engine light came on.
Then the car just cut out and refused to start (caused mayhem at the traffic lights)
After about 5 minutes the car restarted and I managed to limp home.
The revs were shooting up and down, from 800rpm upto about 1800rpm, it did this constantly.
On my way home I got another error on my dash, the engine pressure warning, even though my engine oil is at the perfect level and no leaks were showing, so I put that down to what ever else was going on.

I've been out to the car now and she started first time and sounds perfectly normal.

Ideas please ?

Thanks, so that confirms it.
Is the sensor located under the car near the oil filter ?

Yep that's the one, mine went recently
ARZ K03s, Oettinger Side Skirts, R32 front, Carbon stage 2, Forge 007p (yellow spring), Forge Actuator (yellow spring), Pipercross panel filter with DSG parts, N249 and N112 deleted, SAI deleted, Carbon canister deleted, Rear wiper deleted, Long Life turbo back custom exhaust with 200 cell sports cat, VR6/G60 clutch kit, Creation Motorsport TIP, Catch can, 'Wellycooler', K04 charge pipe, S3 ported inlet manifold - looks pretty standard on the outside though :)
