Timing chain tenisoner failure
« on: 11 June 2014, 13:15 »
Hi Chaps,

I'm on to my second week of ownership with my fantastic GTI and I was wondering about this issue?

I've listened to the various sound clips and asked the previous owner about this too. I've been assured this has been checked (and from my buying experience, I've absolutely no thoughts that this would be otherwise).

I take it this is not a failure on ALL 09 GTI's and only a few have been effected?

I'm confident all is well but you know what niggling thoughts are in the back of your mind?

My car sounds absolutely fine too by the way.

Any thoughts pls.

Regards,

Mart

Hi Martin,

Glad all is well with your car. Did you buy at a dealer or privately? When you say it's been checked, do you mean that the timing's been checked and is fine or the tensioner has been checked for the latest part?

All info about the timing chain tensioner issue is in this thread here:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=262793.0

If the niggling thoughts in the back of your head are too much then the issue can be solved by fitting the later tensioner; again all info is in the thread above and rough cost to change is about £300 at a specialist I believe. Well worth it for the peace of mind imo and if I had an 09 GTI something I'd want done.

Hope that helps mate

Talking as a % I suppose its a very very low % failure rate compated to the amount out there.
