Another question for the Mk 6 GTI experts, any comments welcomed.

After getting my GTI back from having my timing chain issue resolved and having had a major service from the local VW dealer.

I felt eager to drive out to Vienna where I live three quarters of the year, from Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands (my UK base). I have done this journey each way many times.

It is 1050 miles door to door and a pleasure is to enjoy the German Autobahns where you can legally put your foot down.

My question is how fast can I go for say 10 minutes, safe in the knowledge my Mk 6 GTI engine is not going to blow up?

Now, I am a safe driver (full no claims, full license for over 25 years etc, never had an accident) but enjoy safe speed.

My TomTom satnav has shown my car speed to be at 120 mph (the VW speedo shows more), but after driving at this speed on empty roads for only a minute, I get worried my engine is going to start clonking, or dashboard warning lights start flashing highlighting something is now mechanically wrong with my car etc. Then I put my foot on the brakes and cruise gently at circa 100mph

I guess this might be for people who have been on a private track etc (I never have).

Any wisdom or comments welcome, including I am daft mad dangerous fool.

I think given traffic on the autobahns you struggle to get more than a minute before having to drop down to sub 100, my 35 was seeing 160+ last year on GPS but that was Stage 2 so fairly easy to get those speeds

When you state ' I am a safe driver (full no claims, full license for over 25 years etc, never had an accident) but enjoy safe speed', have you had any further training or driving development since passing your driving test?

Agreed i would assume he's pointing towards some sort of high speed training/police etc but seems abit pointless question

Your car is all serviced and you have checked fluid levels tyres you should be fine cruising at top speed.  If I was on german autobahns I think I would cruise at 100 and now and then go upto max.

all based on RPM and load at end of the day.

You can hit high RPM and lots of load accelerating hard in 3rd gear.....probably more stressful than cruising at 100mph in 6th at3-4000 RPM

I was there last year and sitting at 110, 120 is not an issue, the car is very stable and it sure eats the miles up.

However the problem is not how long the engine will last at those speeds , the problem is how long the fuel tank will last

I know what you mean. When I had my Leon Cupra, some 100mph+ cross Europe trips would see a tank of petrol gone in under 2 hours.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.
