Fuel pump or something else....
« on: 14 May 2014, 16:47 »
Hi Guys,

Car has been screetching the last week or so when starting her up (I know starter motor) but I thought I will replace when I have the time.....
So today car started ok, it screetched but started, drove to work, then had to nip out so parked up and then when I came back to it, it really struggled to start but did on the second attempt, so I drove back to work but thought id keep it running for a while, while it was idling it just cut out and now it wont start, its turning over but no spark it seems, so my thoughts were fuel pump or maybe plugs, anyone got any other ideas?

Cheers

Do you hear the fuel pump priming? You checked the fuel pump relay?

If it is the original fuel pump from factory then I would definitely change it. Mine use to do similar things now and then, but it was'nt until I went for my stage 2 remap at R-tech that the fuel pump issue was diagnosed. Apparently they are prone to go, especially if the car has done over 100k
Mods: R-Tech custom remap, Beachbuggy K250 Turbo, Forge 007 DV, RAMAIR Jetstream 108 induction filter, silicone piping throughout, R-Tech Supersize TIP, 42 Draft Stealth Catch Can, N249 bypass, Ported Manifold, Toyo Sports FMIC with 2 & 1/2 pipes, Custom made full turbo back exhaust & 2 & 1/2 " downpipe and 200 cell sports cat. BAM injectors, Turbosmart Boost Gauge, BBS CK Wheels, 312mm Brembo front discs and pads, Carbon canister delete and last of all, a liquid cube!

The fault codes I got when it broke were:-

18048 - engine control module EEPROM - I have read into this and it can be a phantom code
17743 - engine torque monitor 2 - control limit exceeded
18010 - battery cables removed - yes I did this last week
17521 - lambda - I know the pre cat one is shot (has been for ages, on my 'to do' list)
16706 - Engine speed sensor G28 no signal - now I have seen this code before on my car but it went away and never came back until now.

So, any thoughts?

I thought about the fuel pump, but it just seems odd how the car seemed to cut out when warm and then when I went back after it cooled down it fired straight up, same at the garage, they started it yesterday morning twice without fail..

A throttle body alignment will sort out the 17743 code, it did for me. If not, then I was advised to loosen the the preload on the actuator a little bit, like half or one full turn. Definitely get that lambda sorted asap though!

Engine speed sensor is the crank sensor if im right. They can deteriorate because of the heat from the engine.
