Not sure about prices at the min, but I would definately go for a 16v, the difference in the two is 35bhp, which is  quite a big difference..

Prices to buy aint much different. If you buy an 8v you will be dissappointed in the end.

Bite the bullet and get the best 16v you can afford.
Then shop around for cheap insurance!

Nothing wrong with the 8v len old boy just people round here are very elitist when it comes to valves i just think its really sad and a bad reflection upon the site in general that this keeps happening week in week out, what's next the vw driver, drivers being hounded out for having less than 100bhp take it for what it is a vw golf or is that just not good enough any more..

The 16v is faster, the 8v costs less to insure and (in theory) uses less petrol.

I say test drive both, get several insurance quotes on both and decide which one is best for you.

I did that and decided i prefered the 16v, six months later i test drove a VR6...............

A VR6 isn't a way of life, it's just a car.

Not being elitist in any way Wayne old mate!

Look at what she wants! Says she wants a Mk3 to MOD!!!!!
Now why start off with a lower power engine???
I am of course assuming some of the mods will be in the engine department, so why start off with an inferior engine????

Yes also a VR6 would be the best but that would be more expensive to buy and insure.

I think she would be best to start off with the best she can afford and a 16v would be the best all round compromise.

Me biased????

insurance wise, i was told by several poeple that theres not a great deal difference between 16v and 8v.

  Buy a VR6 Depends if you want to be paying through your nose in the future for the vr6 petrol costs..

Group 16 ins for the 16v 150 bhp and ts 134mph

Group 14 ins for the 8v   115bhp and ts 124 mph mine does more at a push..

just the 16v has more to offer higher up after 70mph and 4k rpm so if you wanna lose your licence and pay the extra in fuel and insurance..16v is the way to go..

I have an 8v not being biased at all like most people round here ....
