mk4 temp gage not working!
« on: 31 March 2014, 21:47 »
Hi guy's im new here iv just got my self a mk4 1.8t and the temp gage is not working the car also has a rough idle. I had a look on the net and found it could be the temp sensor so got a new one off ebay and it has had no effect temp is still not working! (The gage is going to dead center when the car is left sitting but as soon as i drive it it moves to the bottom again)

Could i have just got a duff sensor or could it be another problem I.E stat?

On another note iv just drop'ed the car on fk coil's and im now getting problems with the drive shaft hitting the arb is there any cheap fix for this other than a new arb that passes under the drive shaft?

Cheers Si

your temp problem will be your thermostat when buying a new 1 get it from tps or the dealers as cheap eurocarparts thermostats dont last long

Barry is spot on! Also check the temp sensor as there are different ones and you might have the incorrect one, then check the coolant whilst your at it? G12 coolant and there's a drain tap under the radiator passenger side

Almost certainly the thermostat and as Barry says, replace it with a genuine part.

+1 on what dom says its defo your thermostat get it changed and your gauge will read correctly

with your arb issue lowering more than 50mm iirc will cause the driveshaft/arb issue you can always try fitting adjustable droplinks this may help

I had this same problem last week, replaced the thermostat and now it sits at 90, no matter what :)

I've never heard that before, I'll be surprised if they do fit :undecided:

Fitted new stat today only took a hour so chuffed with that and yep gage is holding steady now. Thanks for  advice chaps.

On another note I tried fitting pug 405 drop links thay fit but no joy still rubbing. Going to cut them down and weld them up shorter than standerd ones. Worth a shot I think shorter ones will do the job.
