Actually my second choice car after the GTi was the Leon, took out the 1.8TSi and it was really good fun and there was an alcantra option.

Looking at the photos and the initial reviews the Cupra would have been seriously tempting, but two things really for me, firstly the GTi is a lot more subtle, and secondly, the GTi is a legend

If I was in the position for ordering now I'd be hard pressed to ignore the Leon Cupra.
I don't do badge or any other sort of snobbery; absolutely abhor snobbery.
I owned one of the original Leon Cupras years ago and have had several Ibizas as well. Build quality, reliability and resale value (actual £££'s not silly % of new have all been on a par with other VW stuff I've owned (plenty).

The Leon SC Cupra 280 is, I think, about the only (affordable) car VW group make I'd be 100% happy with as standard, no added options. I'd obviously want to make it faster at some point but that's just 'normal'!!!!
The only option the Leon lacks that the Golf has is the ugly front radar (£500 option) that I really wouldn't miss one bit.
The Leon gets nav, 19's, DCC and the 'Cupra' setting on the car which will be similar to the R allowing it to be a bit more ballsy when you're in the mood.

The Golf R I have huge respect for but it just doesn't float my boat (yet), the GTI is great, drives really really well, looks and feels brilliant, is iconic etc. etc.
But that Leon would just be nagging at me if I was ordering now...

It may have more power but your sacrificing quailty imo. Badge snobbery at its finest here - Seat's are not in the same league as VW. Simple

I agree with you Craig - it looks like a very decent motor but I'd never have it over a GTI.

Completely OT, have you seen the official image of the dash on the new TT?  Looks incredible, very cool!

All digital, seen it. Might get a TT next time, if I can get the missus to take her test and drive the reasonably practical car (she has her eye on an Audi A1 S-line black edition).
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Looks brilliant Mark although wouldn't surprise me with Audi if that was an optional extra. I'm looking forward to seeing pics from Geneva of the full reveal. From what I've already seen I don't think it will be a massive change from the mk2 but could still be very tempted to move back in a few years. Prefer this forum mind you

Looking at interior pictures, the Golf does look a bit better. I just wonder if there is enough difference to warrant the extra cost anymore.
