If I was in the position for ordering now I'd be hard pressed to ignore the Leon Cupra.
I don't do badge or any other sort of snobbery; absolutely abhor snobbery.
I owned one of the original Leon Cupras years ago and have had several Ibizas as well. Build quality, reliability and resale value (actual £££'s not silly % of new have all been on a par with other VW stuff I've owned (plenty).
The Leon SC Cupra 280 is, I think, about the only (affordable) car VW group make I'd be 100% happy with as standard, no added options. I'd obviously want to make it faster at some point but that's just 'normal'!!!!
The only option the Leon lacks that the Golf has is the ugly front radar (£500 option) that I really wouldn't miss one bit.
The Leon gets nav, 19's, DCC and the 'Cupra' setting on the car which will be similar to the R allowing it to be a bit more ballsy when you're in the mood.
The Golf R I have huge respect for but it just doesn't float my boat (yet), the GTI is great, drives really really well, looks and feels brilliant, is iconic etc. etc.
But that Leon would just be nagging at me if I was ordering now...
