People's opinions.........
« on: 02 February 2014, 16:31 »
Hi, not been on here for a long while but would enjoy people's views :-)

I have a late 2007, 1 previous owner (we are the second),5 door, black (lc9z) mk5 gti with DSG, leather and winter pack. I purchased it about a year ago as a 'compromise' car for me and my other half to share as we had our first baby. I had to sell my mint e36 m3 to make it possible. My partner has now started back at work and I said that as she parks in a public car park, that I was not happy that she uses the Golf so instead bought her a runabout Vectra C.

I drive my van all week for work so the golf is now virtually redundant like my M3 was. Perhaps getting used once a week if that. My first question is, is it worth keeping, as in my mind, all it's going to do is depreciate. The car currently has 63k on it, has a literally immaculate interior and a VERY tidy exterior. Cars seem to be going up for anywhere between 7500 and £9000 (Not necessarily selling) and I paid 10k for it a year ago with 48k on so has already dropped more than I would have liked.

The next question is, if I was to sell the car, do I get the wheels refurbished at Aerocoat in Aeromax finish before I put it up for sale? They're about half hour from mine and the wheels themselves have paint flaking off from where the previous owner presumably got a carp job done that looked good at the time. Is it worth the messing around and will it affect the value by more than £400?

I do like the car but as a daily driver. For a 'fun' car, I like rawness like a DC2 or zero depreciation like an M3. The Golf is far too composed for me to drive spiritedly in and I would be scared to track it as I cannot afford to replace it instantly whereas I could with the other two cars mentioned.

What would you all do???

Cheers.  Harry

best getting the wheels done before you sell as its not just the money a new owner will think of

What else will they think of? They'll hardly think I'm tight as there are brand new eagle F1's all round......

What I meant was, if someone wants to haggle £500 off whatever I put it up for with a valid reason being the wheel refurb at £300 and a day out of their life then fine. However, I'd be angry if they started doing it if the wheels were immaculate as they are the only thing that are not...... Do you see what I mean?

well if they want them perfect they will have to go get them done and for some ppl thats not as easy as others with work an stuff then if i personally went to view a car and the wheels were nasty i would think its not been looked after very well  but this is just my opinion others may have a different view

I see. Would you get them done properly by aerocoat or get a slippery joker in a van offering 'mobile refurb' to touch them up?

oh an dont let any pikey with a van touch them

Ok, girl's view for you ....... I would just sell it as it is and not worry about the wheels, to me it is more important to be mechanically sound etc rather than a bit of flaking on the alloys. When I got my mk5 the alloys were a bit scratched but tbh I wasn't really bothered as the rest of the car was in pretty good nick :)

I say go for something outrageous if it's only getting used at the weekend, you can piss off the environmental zealots at the same time . The Golfs talent is everyday ability so sitting on a driveway all week does seem a bit of a waste.

As for the wheels, I would have them refurbed. You might put off potential buyers who will think you might not give a sh!t about the rest of the vehicle.
