Thanks for the reply - so potentially with a GTI and a heavy right are we talking 250 or less p/tank - it would be good to know as I'm company car driver I wouldn't want the embarrassment of explaining how the fuel spend had doubled going for a GTI!!

I like to accelerate hard occasionally but generally traffic doesn't permit that.   My weekly run is around 215 miles with 180 of them being motorway miles either using adaptive cruise or with the speed limiter on gives me an average tank of around 35mpg.    I was late for a meeting last week and absolutely hammered it (when I could) to get there, still averaged 32mpg on that trip.

It's better than previous GTI's but you don't really buy one for fuel economy

I have 1570 miles on the clock and tank range is 370-390 miles. I'm waiting for it to improve

How is that even possible?! U must do plenty on motorway stuff?

Not much. 1/3 of these miles are motorway miles but the other 2/3 are B-roads (could easily call them F-roads..!) I don't give it much pressure yet (going to just 4500rpm -once I hit 5500rpm for a moment) but I alter the revs as I'm running it in. Worse consumption was 28mpg. Best 41mpg. Long term 33.3 now after a lot of cold starts and short distances.

Which would suggest that on average your maximum range is (based on the long term average) is 366 miles and to be safe probably more like 330-340 its an 11 gallon tank. even at 41 your safe range is not going to be much more than 420-430...

Yes Corgi, but I wrote that now, after a lot of cold starts and small distances the long term is 33.3mpg. Last week was full of this starts and I have not refueled since then. So, this tank will make very little mies. My lot of runs are near the 40mpg figures. You also noticed that I have few miles on the car, so the average mpg can be easily changed, up or down.

Reading this is making me wonder why I bothered with the GTD :(

Driving very sensibly my first couple of tanks are showing about 430. Factor in the extra cost of the fuel and I should have just got the sportier petrol!

You're not the only, I get 400 miles when driven hard from my GTD but I reckon by the comments on here I reckon the GTI would do sub 250 miles when driven in the same manner.

This is exactly why i didnt even look at a GTD. I've previously owned a Golf Bluemotion and although the MPG figures are impressive by the time you work out the extra cost of fuel and usually higher servicing costs of a diesel the GTI works out £5 more expensive per week for the miles i do (around 250). For me that is a no brainer.

Now I have passed the 4k mark my daily commute (15 miles each way) is continually providing better MPG. I achieved 42MPG this morning for a GTI that's impressive...

That's better than my commute in my GTD. 20 miles @ 40mpg

I'm guessing/hoping the tank range will improve further when summer arrives. The engine will be fully bedded in and I won't be hammering the climate control on every journey. Might even sneak over 400 miles per tank if I'm very lucky (DSG too). I think that's extraordinary given the power on tap (when you want it).
