I should also say I do think fuel economy is at its best in sport mode.

Now I have passed the 4k mark my daily commute (15 miles each way) is continually providing better MPG. I achieved 42MPG this morning for a GTI that's impressive...

Nice one very impressive that I've got a similar commute couple days maybe 3 then others on M6 to Liverpool about 50 each way, looking forward to see how mine does (only 2 more sleeps!)

Re better mode were you suggesting sport was better than another one? If so is a gut feeling or puter readout? Exactly same speed and circumstances of journey?

Many thanks

380 ish for me. The best was 420.

Long term average is almost 37 after 9k.

Don't forget the mk7 computed mpg is very accurate, the mk6 tended to exaggerate, up to 10% in some cases.
I have consistently got more miles per tank but with a 5 litre smaller tank. The mk7 is better but not the 18% VW claim, probably due to the way the official tests are set up and the fact that stop/start doesn't actually make much difference in the real world.
Mk7 GTI. DBP, DCC, Winter pack. Mine since new, July 2013.
GTI no. 4. Golf no. 5.  VW no. 7.

I find that Stop Start makes a world of difference, especially in traffic. The MPG goes down alarmingly fast at idle.
