Came across this while doing some digging on Google, something to consider possibly...

Quote
Had an annoying rattle from the rear passenger side which annoyed the hell out of me. So much so that I spent the second morning after I got the car trying to pin point the source I ended up finding that the factory forgot to put in the clip to hold the wheel liner in place.
Zip tied it and took it to the dealer... They are replacing the liner as I type this.

After 750 miles, my car has developed a slight rattle from the rear of the car (only over transverse bumps)- so I'll use everything that's been posted on here and check it out ....

Boot rattle was a common issue with the Scirocco - one of the 2 bump stops for the boot lid had some play in it or stuck out further than the other- maybe it's the same with yours. You might need to adjust one or both outwards a notch or 2. You had to get a small (2 or 3mm) allen key through the centre hole and loosen the stop off then pull it out a click or 2 and tighten up the allen bolt.

Thanks MH, not to tempt it, but this looks to have been the source of my rattle, which has made me miserable and annoyed for months.

Thank you very VERY much mate really appreciate this suggestion. After reading this I spied my chance in the weather for a dry day and yesterday I had a look at the boot door. Right hand stop 6 notches visible, left hand stop 3 notches visible. Managed to find an allen key which would fit it, loosened it as you said, pulled it so 6 notches were visible like the other side. Tightened it back up and wala. This rattle was to me sounding like it was rear left which ties in with this stop. Driven it on several drips since yesterday and taken it over roads I knew causes the rattle and I've heard nothing. I've purposely driven round in silence just enjoying the silence.

See how it is first thing in the morning for work, but I think you may have just rekindled my love for the car and most of all, returned my sanity

Hi all,

I had a call back from vw uk on Friday, they claim that the noise is related to shock absorbers, which will be replaced on my car soon, I mentioned that it sounded like an interior noise, but she was adamant that it is related to the shock absorbers. I just went and checked my bump stops as I had the issue on my old scirocco but they were both fine.

Good news that people are getting their rattles sorted :-)

Cheers,
Phil

Glad your getting some information to pass on. VW have not even bothered to phone me back and did not even put my case on the computer after I chased it.

It's funny how the smallest things seem to piss us off no end when it comes to the car. I've got a sticking front passenger door right now, It's a simple door hinge adjustment to make as the gap between front and back doors is too small. It's going to annoy me greatly that my dealership will expect me to leve the car with them a day to "diagnose" the fault, decide that all the rubbing has damaged the door rubbers and they will need replacing anyway, and another day with the car once the rubber arrive to fit them and do the door adjustments.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Oh man that doesn't sound good  I was adamant I was going to track this rattle myself as I knew otherwise I'd just take it in, not have it for a day or more like you say. Also no doubt I would've been told it couldn't be found, probably returning with more rattles. I'm surprised at the number of issues I've seen on here from really what I've always regarded as a high quality car. Shouldn't have most of these issues for the price of the car.

ChrisJL: my 2 Portuguese built Sciroccos were by far my least troublesome VWs from a warranty point of view - one required absolutely no warranty work and the other had some work on the DCC system. German design and German materials are great, but it would seem that German assembly workers are the weakest link. Maybe the Scircco/EOS plant gives its workers more time per car to get it right, as a low volume plant.

Has anyone had any further information on this?

I washed the car on the weekend and seem to have got some marks on the rear bumper that line up slight marks on the lip of the boot. This has coincided with the knocking getting worse this week.

Hi,

I have had a few calls from a guy at VW UK who claims it is being looked into urgently, but he calls once a week with no update. I have made it pretty clear to him I am getting fed up with it, but he reckons it is still down to the factory in Germany...will have to see what he has to say later on this week.

Cheers,
Phil
