Cracked windscreen
« on: 22 January 2014, 12:24 »
Hello everyone,

My windscreen has developed a crack from the bottom edge up about 6", it's obviously going to need replacing and it is covered by my insurance.

Do you guys have any tips or things to watch out for with the replacement. I have auto lights and wipers, I know the sensor is at the top by the rear view mirror , does this need to be taken into consideration?

I needed a new screen in my Passat. My insurers wouldn't let me have a genuine screen and insisted on using AutoGlass. I've had bad experiences with them before, so I rang round local fitters that I knew were good to find one that would be able to sort out my insurance for me. I bought a screen from TPS for £199, £140 of which the fitter gave me back once he'd been paid out by the insurers.

i had a new screen fitted a couple of weeks ago due to an unrepairable chip, fitted by autoglass no issues at all other than the excess

the invoice said the screen was the sensor type.

Don't go through insurance - it affects your renewal!

My excess was 100 and I paid £150 fully fitted with an indie fitter.

I bet that wasn't for a genuine VW screen.

No, just OEM. I did a bit of research on the screens and found that all you're paying for is the name with most. The higher end screens are all manufactured to the same specifications and quality.

When I needed a new screen a few years ago, I managed to get the insurer to pay for a genuine Audi screen

Theres no way it should effect your renewal tried saying i'd had a "claim" i said no its windscreen covered by the policy with a £50 excess they quickly rectified

I had an OEM one fitted by Autowindscreens under insurance. He put them side by side and the only difference was the VW logo vrs some other logo. Someone makes them for VW don't they. Lights e.t.c wipers and all work just as they did. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

As other have said i really wouldnt worry about the screen being genuine VW.  Long as it is the correct sensor screen produced by a reputable, good quality OEM product you will be fine.
