Anyone removed there front arch linings??
« on: 17 January 2014, 18:44 »
I had to remove mine as it had just deteriorated to nothing and was wondering if the problem with my soaked cabin filter could have anything to do with this

Why did you completely remove them? Mine are almost worn through at the bottoms but I wouldn't remove the whole thing just because of that.

+1. Also isn't the back of the arch waxed not painted. Therefore when stones and sh!t flicks up inside the arch it could take the wax off and leave bare metal. Which could then rust from the inside out?

Could be wrong on this though...

I think you could be correct, the mk5 suffers as the arch liner rubs through the wax and they start rusting.

This is correct. My front nearside wing has blistering caused by rust from the inside of the arch. I took it to VW as they stated that there is a 10 year paint guarantee.  Was told this is a common problem with the MK4 as stated above. Because of the fact that the vehicle had no paint service in the past that I wasn't covered.  Eventually I will need to replace the wing or take it off and get it treated and resprayed.
