RNS510 A - Switch for an RNS510 P Model
« on: 17 January 2014, 13:18 »
Im slightly annoyed after finding out i have the oldest RNS510 (A) so after much reading or firmware upgrades and battery drains, am looking at sacking off my model, and buying a newer version.

If i switched out my RNS510, and replaced it with a new model (maybe p type if money allows) then would i be able to just re-use all the cables from the rear of my current 'A' type?

Also, will i be required to update the CAN gateway in order to do this?  Im assuming i'll need to use VCDS to do some coding, so will the cheapo ebay cables do the job?

Thanks in advance!

you can still upgrade the firmware on your A version? i am sure you can get both A and P to be on the latest version so its only the specification thats different. if your car is older than 2008 then you'll suffer from the battery drain issue so may still face that issue with the P version.

My car is a 2006 model, so yeah unless i change the can gateway (totally an option right now), i would suffer from battery drain.  Not sure how big'a task it is to go about changing it, especially as you need vagcom to do some coding.

Im just disappointed to have a sh!t satnav that cant even take postcode searches, plus having ancient maps :(

you can leave your a unit in and use modified firmware to avoid the battery drain. if you can use vcds them all you need to do is scan your canbus code copy it and then put the coding back on your new can gateway.

I tried to update my nav from firmware 1000 to 3810 (modified) last night.  keep seeing Error 010306 and it fails to load the SWL.  Tried multiple discs, and getting fed up with it.  Would ideally find some earlier firmwares to work with, but all torrents and upload sites seem to be far too old, and have since been removed.  Ive managed to find firmware 1020, but thats not exactly an 'upgrade' as such.

Cant find any between 1020 and 3810.

Ive been using Verbatim CD-R's at x1 speed.  using the modded versions (or so i believe)  used a torrent to find the files, so may give the josi files a go first.  I've also got myself a new can gateway, so as soon as i have chance to get it switched and coded, what firmware is the max i can upgrade to?

A small update, managed to update my firmware to 1300 yesterday.  Now SDHC cards work, i have speed limit on maps, and 7 digit post code entry (there maybe more i havent found yet).  Super pleased with that outcome.

As ive already bought the CAN gateway, ill install at somepoint in the future, and then look to upgrade my firmware some more, but all in all, glad ive got a more usable satnav now.

How have you got 7 digit postcode search on 1300 firmware. That only became available on 3xxx firmware??
