Any known problems with the MK6 now? I'm only really up with the MK5 issues.
Read the timing chain tensioner thread at the top of this section.

Thanks I'd seen that
As the one I'm looking at is a May 13 build I'm hoping it won't be a problem. I've just spent 6 months getting new diesel injectors and a none-rusty tailgate for the wife's Passat all paid for by VW, so I do wonder sometimes where the quality control has gone.

Apologies, I didn't initially look at the ad link. I see it's Gilbert Lawton, Macclesfield, I bought my previous mk5 from there.

No probs. I've dealt with them for years. Usual ups and downs. Originally went in for a quote on a MK7 GTI, saw this sitting outside and went for it. All the best bits of my Mk5 GTI, same colour, and the roof comes down. Great for our summers

I'm no expert but I believe the issue with tensioner had been resolved in later cars so touch wood you should be ok

i suggest you go have another look without the rose tinted specs on the practicality front, my scirocco was way more practical, i never took the roof down as i am over 40 and male

If a convertible is a must for the money have you considered:
BMW 1 series convertible
BMW 3 series convertible
Audi A5 convertible
In convertible form at least I think these cars look much better than the Golf GTI. IMHO the golf convertible looks too much like an after thought, it litterally looks like the roof has been cut of with no real thought to how the styling lines should be adjusted to accomadate the convertible format.

Only cars designed as a convertible from the off should exist, for example S2000/Boxster/MX5 etc
Chopping the roof off a hatchback looks awful IMO, and certainly shouldn't be driven by a hairy arsed bloke, no one wants to see your mug driving about
