Going from a MK5 to a MK6 GTI Conv....advice please
« on: 15 January 2014, 23:20 »
After seeing a few good finance deals I popped in to my local dealer to see what he would offer me for my MK5 GTI. I was going to look at the Mk7 GTI but got sidetracked by a very nice MK6 GTi convertible which I'm now thinking of buying. I had a test drive and of course it's a lot like my MK 5 engine wise and no bad thing. Got all the toys as it's ex demo.

Normally I'd spend months researching to find any gotcha's but don't have too much time. What do members think of the Mk6 and the GTI Convertible especially? Any known problems?

I appreciate it won't go quite as fast, handle quite as nicely as a hatchback obviously but I'd like to hear any thoughts. It's a good colour combo too, black with cloth. Comes with the full satnav, Xenons, winter pack, lux pack, parking sensors etc.

Thanks.

i had a cabrio as a loaner and hated it, the boot is woeful and its weird when you corner and realise the rear window moves out of plumb with the car

Image is probably the biggest problem but not if you like convertibles i suppose. Personally its such a compromised idea to chop a perfectly good car in half! Thats before you consider the massive additional weight, i cant believe it would average 37 mpg either.

You did ask

Really not a fan of the Golf cabrio, i think you would be better of revisting the MK7 GTI IMO

Personally I like putting the roof down. I need space for kids in the back. I've had a 911 Cab which had the hardest ride imaginable, so I think this might be a nicer compromise.

Any known problems with the MK6 now? I'm only really up with the MK5 issues.
