Loss of power, No start. Help needed....!
« on: 11 January 2014, 16:01 »
Any help with this will be appreciated. I now have a dead 225BHP golf sat 15 miles away

Summary of problem......

Was in 5th gear about 60mph. Foot down halfway. Turbo spooled. Boost came in and she started to go.

Then there was a slight pop. No power. Put clutch in. Engine then died.

It turns over, won't re-start. Checked boost pipes. No oil in water. No mayo in the cap. No white smoke after the pop.

Anybody had a problem like this? I'm thinking the head gasket may have gone, but have no experience of gasket failure on diesel cars.

Also was wondering if the fuel had somehow given up. But the pump still primes on ignition.

Any helps a winner! Cheers

is it a pd or non pd? does it turn over faster than it used to?does the glow plug light still come on when you put the ignition on?
try squirting a tiny bit of easystart down it just to see if it can physically run for a few secs.
i think i love you.....

Cheers for the reply Dan.

It is a PD engine. 150 standard running a hybrid turbo and mapped accordingly. Does seem to turn over easier, faster i'm not sure.....

The glow light plug does come on as usual.  It has seemed to be running a little bit sluggish recently and not taking off like it used to. I put it down to needing an oil change.

What you thinking?

okie dokie, i was thinking relay 109, but as the glow plugs light is working its not that.
1st check id say, on the egr valve make sure the anti shudder flap hasnt somehow closed itself!
next thing id say is check its getting fuel. id do this by removing the glow plugs one at a time and crank it over. youll see puff of fuel/air mix escaping if its getting through. if not you know theres a fuelling problem. next check the clear fuel line between the diesel filter and the fuel inlet, take it off the fuel rail and put the ignition on with a cloth under it to carch any spillage. if it comes out here but not the bores id say injector loom fault  - maybe the tandem pump. give the oil a sniff, if it smells like diesel it could be a sign the tandem pump has taken a dump. these are all free checks!
thing id say is have it scanned as this might throw up a problem straight away and save all the maybe's. i think these engines have a crank sensor, which do pack up and prevent running.
after that id say get a compression test done the check for worn piston rings or anything like that.
hope u sort it theres nothing as irritating as a broken car than u cant fix!!
i think i love you.....

Its been looked at by my mechanic this morning as I am struggling for time at the min.

Compression was checked. Theres a sh!tload he says. So thats a winner. No gasket failure.

He is thinking the same lines as you that it could be the tandem pump. It's off for further invest at his garage as it's on a random persons drive at the min!

Thanks again for the info Dan.  How big of a job is a tandem pump change?

Well, it's worst case scenario.

The engine has stripped the teeth off the cambelt. They are goin to investigate and see whats siezed to cause this.

Gutted is an understatement!

They reckon it's top end, not bottom as the starter is still turning the bottom end over.

IF it's smashed the valves it's gonna cost a fortune. But, I could source a gas flowed head for the swap. Fingers crossed it's a best case and it's not head off.
