how much play should be in my front bearings with the 30mm drive shaft bolt slackend off

you are not meant to check for play with the nut slack. and there should not be any play when its tight. they tend to start howling first before you can feel any play in them though.

yeah they should be sound. they need to be pretty darn tight them hub nuts.

jeez not quite a scaffold pipe
. 2 foot long breaker bar should be fine and then recheck after a couple of miles just to be on the safe side.

I done it with a bat and it came loose and causeing my brake to squeal when steering

Ideally you do not reuse hub nuts. Though if you dont have a big enough torque wrench, call into your local truck or bus mechanic and ask them to torque it!
