I'd agree with the guys here. A bodyshop repair (respray, etc) would be an absolute last resort and is OTT for damage like this IMO. Sods law says no sooner would you have it fixed than the same thing will happen a week later.

Find a decent / recommended PDR specialist in your area. Many of them are mobile operators and will come to you. A good one will work wonders.

I thought this I have called midlands care care in Walsall I am awaiting a response but they have advised that if the paint it chipped you should have it painted, but like you say don't want to paint it if I can repair it as there is only cosmetic damage nothing more

The mechanic said we wouldn't advise on a smart repair as it would be visible after a while.

Really?! You should have asked them to explain how?
Its not a temporary fix but a permanent one.

I've used PDR guys 3 times now for my wife, daughter and my car and each time the work has been fantastic. £50 to make it look back to new is a bargain.

Repainting would be my last resort. Regardless of how well they blend it in, I think it is always noticeable under street lighting.

Lets be clear - if the paint is damaged, missing, chipped or broken - it will need paint. Its the amount of paint we are debating. SMART repair will use the minimum and confine it to the damaged area. A standard body shop job will re-spray a much larger area with the attendant baggage that potentially comes with this as discussed above...

There is about an inch of paint that's chipped. I have been looking for good chip repairers but I'm not having much luck to be honest in birmingham

I'd suggest you call Gareth at 'Detail My Ride', Berkswell near Birmingham airport. (02476019936). Google their site. In addition to detailing I believe they do repairs such as yours. They detailed my new GTi just before Christmas and it was of the highest possible quality. Gareth is passionate about what he does and I'd recommend him.

I've emailed him hopefully I can get a quote from him asap.

This is his response:

Hi Imran,

Unfortunately although its a very small defect its repair is far from a simple one, mainly due to its location.

To get a perfect repair ideally you need to paint the panel as unfortunately just 'touching in' the chip will still be visible (particularly as it is in such a high profile location that is visible), and will likely wear off over time (e.g. you will need to keep touching it in). There is also the danger that as the paint is exposed (it looks down to metal but not 100% from picture) that rust may cause begin to cause a paint issue in the future.

To ensure a colour match (is the colour flat black or diamond black pearl?) we would ideally need to blend the side of the car to ensure a perfect colour match. We wouldn't recommend/offer a 'smart repair' type job as this would make it look 10x worse!

The other option if you are happy to live with it not being 100% would be for us to pull out any dent to the area using PDR (massage the dent from behind, not filler/paint) and then touch in with colour/lacquer with the risk that it may require re-touching again in the future and will still be visible on inspection. Cost of this would be around 75.00 GBP.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

We had quite bad damage on my wife's Mini repaired by Smart repair.  It was hit from the rear while stationary and removed some paint and also creased the Plastic Bumper where the structure behind the bumper had hit it when pushed forward..

Long story short, but the Girl in the car behind got her Dad to call us, he is a Smart Repair specialist.  He wanted to come and "see what he could do".  I was dead against this and wanted a proper bodyshop repair, but then found that even though the accident was not our fault, it would affect our insurance come renewal time (not fair, but a fact none the less :( ).  A body shop would probably have wanted a new rear bumper and full respray on the rear.

Anyway, he came along and I begrudgingly let him do it, on the understanding if it was not to my liking we would go insurance.  Now, I am pretty fussy, but have to say I could not fault it at all.  The paint match was perfect and the creases in the bumper were completely gone, no sign at all..

Obviously your damage is to metal and not plastic, but it does show what these chaps can do.

If it were me, I would with the understanding of the 3rd party allow a PDR specialist to take a look.  If you are not satisfied completely, then go to a bodyshop.

I agree with everyone here, if you find a good PDR guy the work they can do is amazing.  You will be amazed.

Paint blend is the biggest issue - Deep Black Pearl is a complete bugger to blend in, perhaps the worst colour.

I got a Polo GT new in 2003 with DBP. First wash about a week after ownership I saw a small and sharp crease on the edge of the wheel arch on the front wing - the paintwork was spotless. The dealership admitted that they missed it at PDI and painted the wing and a bit of the front passenger door to blend in. It took them 3 goes to get it looking OK, but in overcast conditions, you could see the blend in area was a slightly different shade.

If a smart-repairer with a good reputation has their doubts over the longevity of a smart repair then i'd be dubious. You'll have this car a long time no doubt. If I'd done this to my own car 6 months before planned replacement then i'd go with the smart repair. A smart repairer knows their limitations, but a bodyshop will almost always advise you go the respray route to get your business.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....
