Dink on my passenger door at birmingham airport
« on: 03 January 2014, 14:11 »
So go to pick my parents up this afternoon and I purposefully due to high wind left a massive gap between me and the next car. Unfortunately, some guy parked opened the door and let the wind carry his door and into mine

That is the damage not much but still new car looks impaired.

The guy apologised and said either insurance or private. Any idea  of cost anyone

Sorry to hear about that bud! If i were in your shoes i would try and go private if at all possible. Try and avoid any kind of insurance black mark against your car.

The sharp crease that runs along the doors in the Mk7 is a real magnet for this problem I fear. If the crease wasn't there I think you'd have gotten away with less damage.

You might get away with a cheap PDR job but it does look like you're missing a chunk of paint there... so to get it 100% right you are looking at a door respray (and adjoining panel blending in) I reckon.

Been there get a touchup pen and a PDR guy to fix it. It cost me 60 notes to have it resolved. As Joe says for a 100% perfect job your looking at a full respray of the door at a minimum. I used a touch up pen its by no means perfect but only I know its there...

Thanks guys I spoke to the guy who damaged my baby. He would rather we settle it. I have taken it to city centre car care in birmingham they are authorised body shop for vag, bmw etc. They will email a quote and then I will take it from there. The mechanic said we wouldn't advise on a smart repair as it would be visible after a while.

Bodyshops are anti SMART (Small area repair technique) fixes as they take business away from them. The damage is light cosmetic and I would strongly suggest getting a reccomended SMART specialist to look at it. Body shop re-spraying can easily get out of hand as they will want to paint the whole door and parts of adjacent panels. I would not want that if it were my car - plus you will have an argument on your hands when you tell the chap that did that he is going to have to hand over £700!!

Also, discrepancies in paint thickness around the car may alert a future buyer to jump to assumptions that the car has been in an accident.

They have said their repair would mean painting the chip and lacquer the door I don't have the foggiest really. Anyone know any smart repairers in and around Brum that you could recommend.
