auq internals max power
« on: 18 December 2013, 21:07 »
I was wondering what is the max power that auq internals can handle.
I have checked on google and I cant find a right answer.
I'm doing a big turbo upgrade and was thinking of mapping it to 330 bhp

It's torque that will bend things, not power

I no but I don't no what torque I would get.
if I put a good oil cooler on to keep to con rods cooler would that help

300 ft-lb seems to be the magical figure atlhough known for standard unmapped torque to bend.

either change to forged or mapping done with rods in mind and drive sensibly - monitor oil temps and don't WOT low down in higher gears.

Cooler oil temp will not stop conrods bending, the problem with the standard conrods isn't just that they are the weakest part of the engine but also the most inconsistent owing to its manufacturing technique, so while one auq might run 350 ft-lb another might only hold 270 ft-lb, so there are two choices, you either run the engine and have a replacement at hand or you build it up before you for an uprated turbo.

This ^^

I would personally prevent a problem rather than fix one

what power would rods hold cause the turbo and injectors are good for round 380 bhp

The rods aren't just weak, they're inconsistent too. So it's not like one can say with absolute certainty where one person's rods will bend and where the next guy's bends. While one person might run 360 ft-lb for over a year, I've also seen cases where people have bent their rods at 270 ft-lb.

If you're asking what the lowest figure someone has bent their conrods, then from what I've seen I would say 270 ft-lb

Mates of mine have different approaches, as mentioned above they either build their engine from the start or has a spare engine ready. But not one believe the standard engine is reliable for 300 ft-lb or more.

With that in mind, Toby's old MK4 made 304bhp and 286lb/ft with a KO4 - IMO that's about the safe limit for standard internals.

I built mine with forged rods and sleep sound, end of. Unless of course you get a steady and cheap supply of 1.8t engines, I've a few friends from Poland and according to them these 1.8t go for peanuts and unless your chasing 400+ bhp its more cost effective to replace the engine (assuming you're doing the work yourself)
