GTI went into dealer on Wednesday - Going back Friday. Advice appreciated.

Hello guys,

I'm turning once again to the great source of advice, experience and understanding of these forums. Basically I have a Golf GTI Performance Pack DSG. It was in the dealers yesterday for warranty work on the following issues.

-Front Suspension; The famous issue of a noisy front suspension. They rang me to tell me it had been fixed by reposition the front gators as they had been knocked out of place by the transport pucks. The issue is better but it still isn't silent over bumpy roads, it still has a knocking sound although less frequent. Are other GTI/GTD's having this same sound or is your car truly silent over bumpy roads?

-G3 Glasscoat; The car was covered in fine scratches & swirls from the application of G3. They've tried to fix it and made it worse. The car was very clean but that wasn't the issue I had. The issue is the base paint that's scratches under all that protective polish/wax. They reckon it was in the bodyshop all day.

-iPhone Cable; The cable just drops out my iPhone 4S, it's shocking with no grip. They reckon it's my iPhone at fault. I highly doubt it as it works perfect with an Apple cable.

-Rattle from Passenger Side Dash; They have told me this is the sunroof, which I think it is. Anyone else got this sound from there panoramic sunroof?

-Rear Camber outside tolerance; They say the car was checked on a generic machine and it's inline on there's. They promised to show me a print-out showing this.

-Start/Stop; At times when the engine comes back on as you lift your foot off the brake pedal it will start rolling forward immedietely. Other times it will do nothing until you prod the throttle and then it jerks forward. They say they've found no issue with this.

-Economy; Poor MPG. They say they've updated the software and will monitor this.

So it's going back in tomorrow (Friday) and I need to prepare a valid argument to get it fixed. I was hoping you fellow GTI/GTD's can help me with some information and my rights, what I can ask for and how you guys would proceed in my situation.

Hi mate, you sound a lot like me!!

The stop start dsg thing annoyed me as well, one thing the tech suggested it could be was when coming to a stop in slow traffic the car already has first gear ready after restart so will creep, when coming to a stop from a higher speed the gearbox doesn't always have the gear ready for when the engine restarts and can take a moment to sort it out, i thought this sounded feasable but didn't have a chance to try it again.

I always had a rattle which sounded like it came from the passenger door but could have been the sunroof tbh not sure, it'll suck if they need to remove the headliner to sort that though!

My iphone 4s never worked with the cable in my mk6 but was fine with the 3gs i had previous?? Never tried it in the 7 sorry.

My gtd is going in for the front suspension issue and poor economy. I would suggest that the car supplied is unfit for purpose. By law your contract plies clauses into the contract requiring the goods being purchased are for the purpose you are purchasing.

Yeah I guess it would fall into that category. It's a joke that they haven't recalled the suspension on all Mk7's yet.

Jimble, I know! I'm treading the same path as yourself right now it seems. Don't get me wrong I love the car, it makes me smile but all these issues are really reducing the enjoyment i'm getting from it. How did you go about with rejecting your car? I'm hoping it don't come to that but I don't want to put up with a rattling suspension for the next few years.

I bought VW because I was impressed with the build quality of my MK5, but if they continue like this I don't see how they can keep demanding that high price tag. People will turn to the likes of Renault and Ford at a much cheaper price.

Tbf if they hadn't monumentally screwed up the paintwork i think it would have been much harder to reject, all of my dealings have been with the dealership who have been awesome tbh rather than VW, the dealership have tried to do a "car swap" with VW due to the original defects, however this was rejected as everything should have been picked up on PDI which is true but VW not supporting it's dealers annoys me! So basically the dealership is taking the hit on the car.


It's this commitment to me the customer that will keep me coming back, assuming they're selling something i want of course!

My 3 week old GTI is rattling on the suspension, squeaking steering, took it back to VW and was told they can t do anything until it
has done 750 miles! Spoke to em again yesterday, why should you have to put up with something thats not right thats cost this much money? Do i take it back?

Will be interested to know what they do for yours, re: poor economy. I'm settled on the fact that if I drive it moerately hard i'll have a lot of fun and have a tank average of 45mpg (actual). This is around what the Scirocco was doing in the winter, although I don't think we've really seen winter yet - mid December and ambient temp at 7am is 10C today!

Sorry to hear of the troubles with you GTi, no doubt if the suspension issue is more wide spread I too shall be facing the same problems 
As for the mpg, this has been a key topic on this forum and to be honest I think we need to let the cars do way more mileage before expecting anything near the manufacturers figures. I'd say 10-20k based on my Polo which I had from new.
As Jimble mentioned, if DSG is not for you like it wasnt for him then your pretty much stuck unless something big happens with the car that puts you in a position to reject it.
Poor mpg would be a hard problem to use to reject a car as Volkswagen clearly cover themselves when it comes to mpg stats and figures. They will just put it down to your driving style.
You will have to go to great lengths to prove your car isnt performing like other GTD's.

You could borrow another GTD in the exact same spec and film your trips in both cars and then use this as evidence to prove there is something not right with your car

I have rejected my GTI and am awaiting replacement. When i looked in to the ins and outs of vehicle rejection i believe the law states that you must give the dealer at least once chance to rectify any issues. After that you are fully within your rights to reject the vehicle.
