Timing belt / Chain Help

Hello guys and girls 1st post here

well bought myself a Vw Golf Mk4 Gt Tdi Last Night 2000 plate

any idea if this is belt or chain and what is the recommended intervals

how do i check which engine i have ????

don't know enough about these have basic knowledge my 1st ever vw always been a vauxhall person

belt iirc. only a chain on the r32.

believe the intervals are around 60k

have a look in the service book, should say.

didn't come with one and no history with it either , its in a garage now but there autodata couldn't tell them must be too old

anyway order one now there going to fit it at same time there doing a few small jobs on the car

Aint just r32. The 2.8 V6 4mo has chain too :wink:

I'd be a bit worried about the garage if they had to look on Autodata to find out if it was belt or chain!

it was before they looked under the hood

the main thing is vauxhall's lol , i always took my cars there spot on guys

i wanted to know oil specs etc so they just looked straight on to the auto data

My autodata is just coming up with timing belts, although I can't be too sure without knowing the engine code

It's a timing belt from the crank to the exhaust camshaft. From the exhaust camshaft to the intake cam is a chain mounted on the other side of the cylinder head. I think it's that way round.

wasn't sure on the 4mo or whether it was just the r that had it :D

No it's just a cambelt, 1.8T's have chain on the cams.

Easy belt to swap but they need timing pins as the cam pulley is variable, both cam and crank HAVE to be locked off, you can physically do it without locking them off and it'll run but it messes with injector timing and it can run rough or just very down on power :wink:
