Direct debit with a charge and no option for 6 months?  What happens if you sell/write off the vehicle?

I know they can check cars but surely this makes it harder to spot non road tax payers?

It is sneaky as every year when it increases it won't look much with a pound or two added each month.

You can still pay annually, It will cost 5% more if you pay monthly. However for those that SORN their car over the winter, it might be just a case of stopping the Direct Debit.

It's Richbrook that I feel sorry for.

someone commented on bbc page and I agree with them

"Why do we have a complex vehicle tax system anyway? If all tax was on the price of fuel it would automatically factor in engine size, transmission efficiency, miles driven, style of driving etc and would need no cameras or expensive admin to enforce payment – no fuel, no go."

Makes sense more you drive more you pay

Also going to be harder for those who buy a used car to know how much rent is on the car.  Unless theres going to be a online checker to check the expiry of the tax then the idea is flawed, even more so for those who dont have access to a computer etc.
