Lupo / Polo airbag removal tips?

I fitted this steering wheel to my mk3 a couple of years ago and haven't ever needed to remove it until now due to breaking and I can't for the life of me get the bugger off. I know there are two holes on the rear of the steering wheel which you are supposed poke a flat screwdriver in to release the holding springs but they simply won't come out so wondered if anyone had any tips as I'm absolutely stumped?

Sure about the flat screwdriver thing? Thought they were 4 or 5mm head size allen bolts?
