Washing the car has given me the answer. The sensor is moisture sensitive so I just need to lick my finger before locking the car. Tried it and it now works first time every time

Correct, you cannot lock the key in the car as the car sensors know it's inside. :) it's a clever system. Search YouTube for a video tour of it.
Agreed - proved in anger yesterday...

My drivers door won't let me lock or unlock the car using keyless but the passenger door works normally. I think I might have a faulty door handle sensor as I get a keyless faulty message on the dash. Looks like it will be going back to the dealers, I havn't had it 12 hours yet  must of been missed at PDI?

Hard luck.  How could they overlook that on the driver's doors, and the error message?  I've never (as yet ) had any problems or error messages but would also guess on a faulty handle sensor or a loose connection to it.  Hope they they make short work of sorting it for you.

I've booked it to go back to the dealers to be fixed. At least I can write something on the customer survey when it comes.

Proved in anger again today  this time in the dark.  The indicators flash furiously plus a "you idiot" type message on the MFD.  Impressed.

Who said that they did? It could have failed subsequently.

Typically, with these micro switches they either fail early or will last a long time. On my 911, there are micro switches that drops the windows a little when you open the door (frameless windows on the cab)...

I have all the invoices for the car and there's nothing about replacing any of the micro switches (and it is 10 years old, next week)...

Get it in, they'll check it and replace what needs to be replaced... that's what warranties are for...

Why was it designed with a need to touch the door handle to lock the car? Surely if you have stopped the car, turned off the engine, opened the door(s), closed them and then moved the key away from the control zone the car should lock automatically?
