I imagine it could be a safety issue - passenger left in the car with the deadlocks activated? Personally, I prefer to hear the reassuring "clunk" and see the indicators flash to confirm the car is locked when I tap the door handle.

I believe it does, except VW call it Safelock. You should get a "Check Safelock" warning in the MFD after turning off the engine.

Yep, one click of the lock button or touch of the handle locks the car with it enabled, double click locks it with it disabled and the door LED won't flash continuously.
