This is ridiculous it's going to cost me best part of a grand to insure my gti when it comes and you could be insured for the best part of a decade for that!

Don't think you'll see that quote beaten.

Blimey, I'm gonna get a quote from Hastings when my Gti finally arrives! That's an excellent premium. When I was thinking of getting a GTi I went on confused.com and got cheapest quote in at £225, however got no claims since god knows when, so I should in theory get something better.
But you know, insurance quotes don't quite make sense. If anyone can throw any light on it, please do. Why is the cheapest quote for my current car, 2008 Honda Civic 1.8, so much more expensive, than a new and much faster GTi???

Because age and performance of the car are not the principal considerations when quoting a premium Gina!

there are too many variable which make up insurance premiums.
Car class
Insurance group
Post code
Storage over night
Annual mileage
Insured value
No claims years
Age
Employment
Your profession

I'm renewing mine, going to cost another £200 approx to take me until June 2014
My polo cost £430ish so that makes mine £630ish pa!!
But insurance companies try and make extra when you renew or change cars midway.

My R32 costs me £240pa and my brothers Golf £500ish
2014 Volkswagen Golf GTi
2004 Volkswagen Golf R32
2011 Volkswagen Polo Bluemotion
2001 SEAT Arosa TDi S
1999 John Cooper Mini Works S
2005 Vauxhall Astra SRI CDTi

2002 Audi S3 quattro

How is it costing you that much?

At 20, I though my insurance would be pretty hefty. Admittedly, mine's a GTD, and the insurance was £620. I did try on a GTI as that was always a consideration, and it was only £50 more.

I got mine through compare the market with Elephant.

The big thing which got my insurance down was named drives. With just me, it was £1800. With me, my partner, and my two brothers, it came down to £700!

After then playing with a few other bits, it was cheaper to say I leave the car on the road instead of a garage.
It was cheaper to start the policy 30 days in advance, then call them when taking it out instead of buying online and get them to put the policy to the day you actually want. Doesn't change the price.
Try your profession out with different job titles as some shoot it right up. For me, a car salesmen was twice the price of a sales executive working in the motor trade.

And my variables are. I'm 20. Held licence 2.8 years. No NCB (due to being made up on a company car which somehow doesn't count??). I do however live in a safe Post Code.

Recently sold my GTD.

I know, but the car is the only difference when applying for premium quotes. What makes the MK7 Golf GTi so much cheaper to insure than a 5 year old 1.8 Civic?

@Gina, one aspect is the active safety (braking) equipment. Newer cars are generally easier to repair and more secure too.
