@corgi, my last two cars have been a mk5 golf S 1.4, 80 raging horses! And a mk6 GTI, again perhaps the brakes are some thing i need to get used to but i drive quite a few different cars and vans big and small but i seem to find myself getting a bit close to the car in front now and again after braking pretty firmly in the MK7, how long should it take for the discs and pads to "bed in"? The 1.6d se i've got as a courtesy car this week seems to have better brakes but thats got 2.5k on.

My opinion is that most modern cars have over servoed braking systems - Audi, BMW, Mini and Citroen are the worst in my experience making the brakes seem very good on initial application but making them snatch and difficult to modulate. I assume that the upgraded brakes on the GTI PP are Brembo 4-pots (or similar - I haven't checked) and in my experience these tend to be set up with much less servo assistance.

My 911 has a similar setup (4-pot Brembo all round) and you would never describe them as lacking but you do need to a good push... the first time I drove it I thought they were not working... now I think they're great, easy to modulate but very powerful when you need them to be...

Give them some time, I expect they're taking some time to get used to.

BTW, a few hundred miles should see your brake pads bedded in...

I love the car! But yesterday after 2000 miles my auto handbrake has started to play up.

When taking off at the lights the handbrake will not let go, I have to rev up to get away.

This morning is was washed and suddenly it's working again!

Is it a sensor maybe?

Surprisingly, the brakes on the PP GTi are nothing too special over the standard GTI brakes. It's the same basic single piston calliper that the non PP model has (albeit with a fancy GTI plaque that covers it), but with larger diameter discs, and ventilated discs at the back.

Even the new "R" model has the same setup as the GTI PP. Strange that a car worth nearly £30k, gets a pretty basic set up (albeit from what I've heard quite effective), yet the Megane's etc of this world that are £8-£10k cheaper get a full Brembo set up. VW penny pinching again ?

My handbrake failed completely for a journey – the MFD proclaimed that functionality was lost for both the hand brake and hill hold.

Next trip and everything was back on. I’ve had the hill hold turn itself off on a few journeys too. I have noticed that the handbrake system aggressively keeps a grip when you want to go into reverse – seems to need twice as much throttle to disengage it.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Really? that's a poor show... as I said, I hadn't looked in any detail at the specs. I'm not convinced that there's a significant benefit of vented disks on the back on a front wheel drive car.

Sounds about right tbh, perhaps they do have less assistance in an attempt to give them more "feel" then?

Cheers.

^ this.

Also once, before turning the engine on, my friends and I got in the car and it started to roll forward as if the handbrake released. Pretty scary considering there was a parked car 2 foot away. These guys are big lads but i still didnt expect the handbrake to realease. Hasn't happend since.

I also wouldnt have minded more control over the media system from the steering wheel.

Same as last gen tho, however I think Seat offered as an upgrade on the latest ibiza and the were standard On mk1 cupra R's, shame really but unless your track saying I've found the standard brakes fine for road use

What's annoying me the most just now is thinking that i should have been more patient and waited for the R to come out especially given the price.

I think coming from a 200bhp TT, the GTI is not giving me that excitement power wise that i thought it might do purely based on the big step up in torque. It doesn't feel any quicker than my old car which is a bit of a let down. I'll maybe go and test drive an R when a demo arrives but to be honest i very much doubt i would be trading up straight away given the depreciation in the first year.

It's still a fantastic car in terms of looks and technology, and I'll hold on to it for three years i reckon but thereafter illl look to see what else is out there. Whatever i decide to get next (circumstances allowing, it will have to be at least 250bhp plus

They've mapped all the fun out of the engine. This car NEEDS a remap. No arguments!!!

On another note, Jimble's car is a GTI and a lot of the compliments on the DSG are from the Diesel boys (and girls!!) and I have always thought the DSG is more suited to the narrow power band of the TDI better (and also strangely the R32 which also really suits DSG). I much prefer my GTIs in manual.
And the gear knob looks better!!!!

Then again I didn't want DSG as I drive so many different cars and vans all of which are manual I'd just have a left leg flapping in the air all the time when I drove a DSG GTI!!

It's bad enough having a left hand waving about looking for a handbrake all the time without a left leg too - passengers would think I had an electric wire going up my arse...
