Replacement Engine!!!
« on: 13 November 2013, 16:42 »
Just back from the main dealer who had been investigating excessive oil consumption. The girl behind the desk says "Its definately used more than 1 litre since it was in (1,360 miles later) so the mechanic says its most likely the piston rings. To be honest the labour costs will be a lot so you are probably looking at a new engine. I'll come back to you tomorrow when I've spoke with the Warranty Manager to see if there is any goodwill as its quite young". It's the 2 litre DSG, just nearly 4 years old with 52k miles.........any thoughts anyone!? What do you think? What should I do? Tempted just to trade it in (but not for another VW!) but i just love the car and driving it :-(

I would def hold out for a Goodwill Gesture and then ring VW Customer Services and argue it further if they dont agree to 100%, and also have it out with the dealer to get the labour right down.

If you can get it for a good enough price and love the car, go for it. If you fancy changing it, just trade it in and save the money and hassle.

Trading in could cost you more than the contribution you may have to make towards the new engine.

You love the car, you'll love it more with a new engine...

UPDATE

So I spoke to the Service manager this morning.

I've actualy done 2,175 km since they topped it up and he confirms the oil light comes on when the dipstick minimum is reached (which it had when I took it back 2,175 km later). He says the top mark to the bottom mark of the dipstick is 0.9 litre so I'm not far off the handbook guidance of 0.5 litre per 1,000 km. He says he sees some boy racers use that pretty quickly and others (like me he says ...cheek :-) who "pootle around but occasionaly put our foot down on the motorway" use hardly any oil in the GTI. He's going to get on to VW and come back to me in a few days. I asked about compression tests and why the service girl had said about the new engine but he didnt comment (not surprisingly since he wouldnt have had the facts in front of him in fairness). His reaction seemed to imply its fairly normal and wouldnt be concerned.

What other questions should I be asking when he calls back?

A mechanic I know of is saying its likely to be the Turbo picking up oil from the sump and a trubo fault

Someone else is saying repalcing the piston rings isnt a huge job anyway

Compared to a new engine (and the costs), why shouldnt I just implement a strcit regime of topping it up with oil once a week? I know oil isnt cheap but its gotta be less than changing the engine? or am I missing some other issue like it failing an emissions test or further deteriorating in the future.

What about using "Restore engine restorer" additive?

Help - I know very little about car mechanics.....just love driving the car!

Get them to top it up don't put anything in it ie engine restorer check it everyday before starting it and monitor I'm pretty sure if oil was getting into the turbo you would be getting blue smoke out of the exhaust check the coolant level also make sure oil isn't in there the engine is only 4 years old and has average mileage so restorer wouldn't in my opinion help put cardboard underneath the car to check for leaks check sump plug isn't leaking and I think a second opinion wouldn't go a miss

Im assuming they have checked for leaks In the know areas.
. Turbo high pressure oil feed pipe on rear of engine.
. Crankcase ventilation system faulty valve causing the engine to feed the oil into the inlet and intercooler pipes.
. Turbo seals.

A friend of mine has just had an engine replaced on a 2.0TFSI Audi A4, due to excessive oil consumption.

No reason was given..

Well, half the problem is I don't actually know what they have done. I was so shocked I just dragged my dropped jaw out the showroom without really asking :-)

They said they had checked it for leaks and found none, which is why they thought it was the piston rings. I guess the above are things I can specifically ask the service manager when he calls me back next week. I'm certainly not going to pay anything towards a new engine until I have some confidence (probably after comparing notes through this forum) as to what it is they have and haven't checked. Reading the stuff on here about the chain drive issue, I'm thinking maybe the dealer's just thinking "its another 59 plate, needs stripping down for the piston rings, may as well replace it as it's only likely to subsequently have the other issue later....." and of course that would partly be at the customers expense along the lines of "wear and tear" but maybe I'm being cynical. I'll see what the dealer says. An engine reconditioned from London called me back and wants £2,095 inc vat that's with a lifetime warranty but doesn't include the turbo. It's at least a comparrison for when VW come back. Presumably I could just put up with it and just keep topping it up with oil. 1 litre a month is about £90 per annum.....a lot less than an engine.

Thanks for all the replies, really helpful
