Swirl marks - Suspecting Glasscoat Application
« on: 10 November 2013, 11:10 »
So since we've had no sun until today I've noticed that in direct sunlight you can see lots of tiny swirl marks on the cars paintwork. I've had the G3 Glasscoat applied and I'm certain that it's been caused by whoever has applied the coat.

Has anyone else got this problem? I'm not sure what to do but I'm not really chuffed.

Hard to see in the picture but you get the idea.

Could this be caused by the transport film? I'd like to correct the paintwork but I'd also like to keep the G3 coat on the car. But I'm not prepared to pay again for the coat to be reapplied...i'm obviously not able to get under the Glasscoat to the paint without removing it.

It does look like it's been done during the washing process, it could've happened prior to the G3 application but could also be caused by washing afterwards, i'd say it'll probably need a light machine polish and a re application unfortunately. :(

When you say you have had the G3 applied - who did it? Dealer - detailer etc?

Should I contact the dealer and inform them of the problem? As it's only available to Trade so they 'd have to rearrange the application anyway.

I feared as much. Any great detailers in the midlands? I used to use Detail My Ride but heard Nathan's left there now. I'll kick off at VW for them to do my Glasscoat.

The dealer applied it before I picked it up. Was all in the price.

Have you washed it much since you've had it? And what method do you use?

I've washed it once. I use the two bucket method, use a lambs wool wash mitt and don't use circular motions. It's pressure washed before and after to remove any loose crap too. I'm very careful & know it wasn't caused by me.

Unfortunately the application of sealants is a specialist job and not something that should be carried out by dealer prep staff. Either do it yourself or get a detailer in to do it.

The car would have had to have been very carefully washed (as you yourself clearly do) using appropriate methodology and equipment, de-ironed, clayed, etc before they even attempted to apply the coating. It may have needed some localised correction too (even on a new car). Chances are they just washed it with a sponge and wiped on the sealant....
