I tried speccing what i would want and it came to about £37k. If I was going for an R I would want DSG, leather and 19"s above my GTI spec. The car looks lovely but at that price range you have so many options including 135M, 235M, S3, TT mk3 etc. It would be a difficult choice that's for sure.

Your right but the a Golf R does appeal to a lot of people but for me the GTi was a better car to suit my needs, I already have a Golf R32 too  :laugh:

If my budget would have stretched to an R then I would have held off but unfortunately it doesn't quite go that far just now. Still the dream is to be in a 911 by the age of 50   :smiley:

I could have bought one and might have if I didn't have the original R32 but I too want a Porsche in the future.
997 Porsche GT3 Gen2 :)
Personally I would take the Golf R over the A45 AMG and 1/235i but a Audi S3 saloon is such a nice looking car.

Try speccing an S3, they easily push into the £45,000 mark to be anywhere near as spec'd as the R. Everything's an optional extra, even things that should really be standard. Cruise Control, heated/folding mirrors, optional extras on a 32k base car!

The Golf R offers most value for money.
Current - MK7 Golf GTI - Tornado Red, 5 Door, DSG, Performance Pack, Dynamic Chasis Control, Panoramic Sunroof, Discover Navigation, Dynaudio.

On Order - MK7 Golf R - Pearlescent Black, 3 Door, DSG, Vienna Leather, Discover Nav Pro, Rear View Camera, High Beam Assist, Keyless Entry, Dynaudio (Tech Pack)

All gone.

Now;

MK7 Golf R - Lapiz Blue, 5 Door, DSG, Carbon Nappa, Discover Nav Pro.

Specced up a 5-door DSG in Lapiz with Pretoria 19s, DCC, Pano Roof, Nav Pro, Keyless & 3 year Service, came to a staggering £37,500

If I get the same deal I got on my GTI I'd be looking at £32,900 for that spec and I think that would be worth considering seriously. There's more margin for discounts on the R, particularly a highly specced one.
