I had a quick look on Drive the deal today and had a play around with speccing one. I think if I went for the R I would want the DSG. By the time I added on other options I would like such as the DCC, nappa leather, 19 wheels, sat nav and the metallic paint I was over £34k and that was with the discount. Okay I could probably do without most of those options but for me it's that payoff between having the GTI with all the nice extras or having a vanilla R but knowing that it has an extra 70bhp and awd

I think the guys that have ordered the PP may well get the best of both worlds from a performance per pound perspective. I'm glad I've ordered it and once it's had a bit of a remap you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference in performance between a lightly tuned GTI and a standard R with a saving of £3-4k (or with £3-4k of options).

Yes, you don't get the 4wd (and the associated extra drag) or the looks (which are subjective anyway) but you will get a heck of a lot more exclusivity.

Still both great cars - I'm just too tight and like my gadgets too much (as well as the road tax being about 300% extra per year on the R out here in Cyprus)

Your right, it doesn't have many bespoke parts a, just re-badged bits and slight modifications.
The seats seem unique with the carbon nappa leather but they should be for the price.
It's clever marketing from Volkswagen though to keep profits high and part sharing to a maximum.
For me the R doesn't feel special enough :) just a tuned up GTi.

How much is the road tax likely to be on an R? And how much was it on the mk6?
Currently pootling around in our family wagen, a Tiguan SEL 😂

Looks like they're putting the R on the online Configurator. Still not fully on yet though.

Recently sold my GTD.

Right,

the road tax should hopefully be £175.00 pa, 159 g/km CO2
Insurance will probably be at least 5 groups higher than the GTi if not more due to the lack of ADC and higher performance.
Servicing costs should be similar to the GTi apart from the addition of Haldex and DSG oil services.
