I know what you meen DSG cannot do everything. Also and im sure I will get beaten down again but ive always got better fuel consumption out of the manual over the DSG. With the mk5s for example it worked out over that milage on the same commuter routes as 3mpg or 10%. I also wonder how a mk7 DSG it will deal with the snow as pulling away in second in the manual helps.
Im actually having secondthoughts about the R. I actually like the idea and the looks are really growing on me but maybe like the mk6 R i will be put off by the demographic it attracts. My GTI was bought as a commuter tool its how 99.9% of its mileage has been done. I have been considering the mk7 R as an all year round, all weather machine which would meen I could get rid of my winter car. So i could reduce my car count to just 3 in total in the end. (Commuter, classic, sports car)

@Jimble what are you not liking with DSG?

Back on the R topic - why do most folk think its essential to have DSG on the R?

Ok, trying not to stray too far off topic, the biggest problem i have is that there is no consistency with it on my daily route which has some up and down hills, stop start traffic and a couple of long straight roads, if your travelling at speeds between 28 and 31 mph it will either be in 3rd or 4th and will only change to 5th at 32mph or above?? whilst whilst accelerating up and and down any kind if gradient it will hold onto 2nd or 3rd way too long or it'll be in 4th and i'm happy! I've done the same journey ~25 times in this car now and every day seems different! When in stop start traffic with the stop start system active it's pot luck as to whether it'll pull away smoothly as soon as you lift your foot off the brake or if it will lurch forward as it releases the brake itself and the traffic in front has disappeared into the distance!

If the car is just in D there isn't enough urgency when trying to pull away quickly or accelerating hard from a slow pace unless you floor it into kick down which seems to take an eternity to decide which gear to be in! Now this can be solved by being in S but then the revs are held up at 3k which i don't want all the time!!

I've tried driving it in manual mode in traffic but it will not give me the gear i want and still changes down for me! WTF?

I may have misunderstood Jimble but why do you want 5th gear at 30mph? That would be labouring the engine and have no response to acceleration at all. 3rd is ideal at that speed.

Mine always pulls away smoothly from auto stop/start as soon as I remove the brake pedal, do you have auto-hold on? I turned this back off as there's a little delay.

As for kick down. Mine changes instantly on kick down. It will drop from 5th into 2nd for example and instantly send you flying.

19" Pretorias is the one in the picture, this is a £895 option.

we where meant to be able to spec the other wheel, Cadiz in 19" as well as the standard 18" but this is not on the uk option list.

I suspect the picture of the Cadiz you have seen is the 19" version. but the UK spec is an 18"

I was under the impression there two options, the standard 18" Cadiz, or a 19" of the same alloy.

According to the price list there these.

In Germany, you do get the options for 19" Cadiz, but not in the UK price list. But as others have said, it's a VW pricelist so probably completely wrong

Best bet would be to ring the dealer and see what options are available on the system

I went for the Pretoria 19" anyway so didn't ask about the availability of the Cadiz in 19"

Is it not that the 18" Cadiz option pictured is just for a winter tyre setup? Looking at it, there does seem to be a lot of use of the word 'winter' in the description.

No the 18" Cadiz is standard, same as in the uk.

however you can also spec an addition set of wheels and tyres for winter use.
