I think DSG for a few reasons; they will get the best out of the thing in a controlled way, VW clutches are like paper, if you map it (ABT got 370bhp out of new A3) you are in for £1k on an uprated clutch which is heavy and will never get your money back, DSG you will get a %, and I think there will be more demand for a used one

I get why people don't get it and I'm popping my DSG virginity, my dealer thought I was taking the p when I said ACC and adaptive chassis

The manual in the mk7 GTI is a real peach

Slightly off the 'R' topic but I love the DSG in my GTI. So so smooth and phenomenal in heavy traffic (which is where I spend lot of my time). Btw I test drove the manual GTI and it was an incredible box. Very, very smooth and sweet shifting. A joy.

@Jimble what are you not liking with DSG?

Back on the R topic - why do most folk think its essential to have DSG on the R?
Well the Golf R is all about its figures and acceleration, so that's why I would pick the DSG.... better performance figures.

@Jimble what are you not liking with DSG?
He says why below
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=254838.1500
I drove a mk5 GTI dsg extensive probably 20k and also a mk6 for a weekend I just cannot get on with dsg either. The cost of a mecotronics unit (as they can be troublesome and really need clean oil) in the future and regular dsg oil services are possible extra expenses too.

If I bought an R and its looks are growing on me unlike the GTI  it would be manual car. Its not all about 0-60 figures unless your someone that needs to brag about such stupid things. To me it is about driving pleasure and I just don't get that in any  dsg car.

Struggling to remember the last time I read of recent mechatronic failure on cars newer than 2009, I'm sure someone will elighten me but not like when they were all dropping like fles on the pre 2008 stuff

Using my extensive sample base of one, I've had zero issues with anything related to the DSG box (be that the box or the mechawizardry) in two years. There's a Tiguan with a DSG box in the family that has been fine over 18-months plus, too.
Granted it doesn't mean a great deal when those with problems out-shout the rest of us but it needed to be said.

Tootle about town in D with ease and slap the 'shifter' left into manual when you wanna have some fun... driving rather than stirring pudding.

Personally, I love the thing and would now never have a car without a DSG (in whatever flavour that may be). Three people driving my car have been the reason they have now bought DSG (or similar) equipped motors.

I've had dsg gti's since 2008.  Not a single issue so far.

DSG is highly criticized for no reason at all. It's a fantastic box that is just as likely to fail as a manual gearbox in today's modern engineering world. It covers all the bases with drive, sport and paddles.

People go for DSG in fast cars because it gets the best performance from the car. It changes gears quicker than human beings and is the reason why it's half a second quicker in the R than the manual equivalent.

It's always personal preference but you buy the R because it's quick and the DSG version is quicker so it's a no brainer for me.
Current - MK7 Golf GTI - Tornado Red, 5 Door, DSG, Performance Pack, Dynamic Chasis Control, Panoramic Sunroof, Discover Navigation, Dynaudio.

On Order - MK7 Golf R - Pearlescent Black, 3 Door, DSG, Vienna Leather, Discover Nav Pro, Rear View Camera, High Beam Assist, Keyless Entry, Dynaudio (Tech Pack)

All gone.

Now;

MK7 Golf R - Lapiz Blue, 5 Door, DSG, Carbon Nappa, Discover Nav Pro.

Ok, trying not to stray too far off topic, the biggest problem i have is that there is no consistency with it on my daily route which has some up and down hills, stop start traffic and a couple of long straight roads, if your travelling at speeds between 28 and 31 mph it will either be in 3rd or 4th and will only change to 5th at 32mph or above?? whilst whilst accelerating up and and down any kind if gradient it will hold onto 2nd or 3rd way too long or it'll be in 4th and i'm happy! I've done the same journey ~25 times in this car now and every day seems different! When in stop start traffic with the stop start system active it's pot luck as to whether it'll pull away smoothly as soon as you lift your foot off the brake or if it will lurch forward as it releases the brake itself and the traffic in front has disappeared into the distance!

If the car is just in D there isn't enough urgency when trying to pull away quickly or accelerating hard from a slow pace unless you floor it into kick down which seems to take an eternity to decide which gear to be in! Now this can be solved by being in S but then the revs are held up at 3k which i don't want all the time!!

I've tried driving it in manual mode in traffic but it will not give me the gear i want and still changes down for me! WTF?

The couple of blasts i've had in it in manual is where it really makes sense and the reason i suspect most people will get DSG in the R, when you keep the revs up and give it the beans in the twisty roads i think "now i remember why i ordered DSG" but then it's back to the daily grind and it all goes to sh!t again! i think it's just my daily route that causes my annoyance but there isn't much i can do about that without adding about 5 miles onto the journey! I have a few other gripes with this car and most are due to some of the options and thats why i said if i did order an R the options list would be left pretty much alone, i don't need half the stuff i specced on the GTI and probably wouldn't bother with them again, i'd go manual in the R because i don't drive like a hoonigan very often and when i do i think the "pudding stirrer"  will do just fine!

Based on that I would just get a manual GTi, after all the Golf R is just a tuned up GTi with more weight and more performance.
Does anybody think the Golf R is going to be more fun than a GTi Performace Pack car when going around corners?
For me Haldex is a real fun killer when it comes to weight & steering ability :(
There are some good reviews about the 45 AMG 4WD system though.

Sorry to hear you're not enjoying dsg, Jimble.  I must say I absolutely love it but it does take a while to get used to.

Your experience of it sounds very odd to me.   My experience is somewhat different (the opposite if anything), especially with regard to the ascent and descent of gradients.  The couple of hills I have on my daily commute it consistently picks 4th every time.  Rest of the journey is fairly consistent too.  It was interesting though on a recent trip up north (where you get proper hills), I always had to switch to manual, as in D it wanted to go up some pretty steep hills in 5th and even 6th in some cases!!  Similarly on descents that required a low gear, left to it's own devices it would again go for 5th.  In the end I just drove in manual and had a great time.

If I have any criticism it is that in D it changes up too quickly and in S it hangs on for just a tad too long.  Now if there was something in between it would be perfect!  That said, I am a dsg convert and would have the R in dsg.
