This seems very fair Wigit. I know exactly where you are coming from and 100% agree with what you have said.

J

I did 300 miles in two days in the Mk7 so not some 15min dealer test drive and drove it back to back with my 35 which whilst not the fastest in a straight line compared to some is sorted in the handling and braking department :)

Biggest revaluation was the adaptive chassis control on the Mk 7, hated it on the Rocco as was just crude, now you can set it up how you want its a revaluation and a box i'd tick something i never thought i'd say

People knock Clarkson but he is a guy who hits the nail on the head of how a car makes you feel and sometimes its not all about the greatest handling machine and lap times around a track in Germany, some times the lesser car on paper is more fun (which is why a preferred a GTI to a S3 which i respected but always found uninvolving to drive)

Interestedly this is why whilst the 35 is better than the wife's Pirelli in may ways it doesn't feel as special, there is something about the anniversary GTIs that tugs at the heart strings

Gti7me, don't get me wrong, I hate being part of the people that criticise a car that I haven't driven, just the ed35 seemed to sound so much more like I wanted my standard 6 too and the ACC gave me the balance I wanted suspension wise.... I loved my 6s interior and the way the dash pods angle out wards etc and being honest the looks of the ed35 give me more phoah.... So paying the extra 4-5k may not be worth it for me, the re-sale probably will be better on the ed35 too... That's a guess btw lol.... Mk7 R isn't an option for me tbh, and no matter how good the 7 is I just can't seem to shake the 6ed35 out of my head
Think I'm answering this myself
Cheers potts

Btw, am I remembering this correctly in that the ed35 sounded more fruity/throaty ?

BTW - you are remembering correctly !

I know were your coming from im waiting for the mk7 GTI to grow on me but I dont know if it ever will theres too many boy racer glowing lights strips, that line in the lights and badge features for me. Its a personal view most seem to like these.. The R mk7 apart from the exhaust interests me more but it using the EA888 engine scares me...

The ed35 is a car I regret not waiting for especially after the timing chain tensioner issues that can effect EA888 engines.

Tend to agree, seems the best of both worlds TFSI with MK6 design. TSI has benefits but they are outweighed by a potentially serious fault...

The R is shaping up to be my favourite of the MK7 range.

The 7 it just felt big & to grown up.
I know what you meen why they had to make it bigger again is beyond me. The mk6 is far too wide and long enough to make the 7 slightly wider and so much longer is crazy.
The mk7 is 2.5" longer than the original passat and similar to what cars like the mk2 cavalier and sieras were. To me its too big.

I went and test drove a mk7 and walked away with a 35!! Looks didn't float my boat and to spec it close to a 35 would prove too costly!! Still the mk7 doesn't turn my head, but just walking to my 35 puts a smile on my face!! Good luck whichever you decide.

Now the R has got me looking and it will be nice to see it but im in no rush. I certainly wont opt for a Mk7 GTI for the hell of it.

My 35 is less than 2 years old and the highest specced car ive ever owned and its a dream to have.

Ive more typically owned Audis inc an S3 and i find the 35 the most engaging car ive ever owned and better than the S3.

The garage specced my car and i have more toys than a 2 year old and love them all. the ACC is brilliant on this car and coloured DIS as well as a sunroof and reversing camera is just a treat.

Although i never owned one if Im honest the Mk 5 is the prettiest GTI and the Mk 6 a nice progession but the Mk 7 is fat, too grown up, is uber european and simply becoming a bit too square and boxy. The rear clusters are a joke.

No Ill hang on too a magnificient take on the Mk6 GTI and the 35 wins over the Mk 7 R for the moment and NO to the Mk 7 GTI.
