Timing chain problem?
« on: 01 November 2013, 17:36 »
Hi all, driving the car today and it came to a complete stop, tried to start and earning came up and said something like "Engine Check, take to workshop!" The car finally started and I took it to the dealers.

They stuck on the diagnostics and they 'think' it's the timing belt. He mentioned something like a TPI and VW may pay for the parts.

Now has anyone heard of this? What is this going to cost me?

Cheers,

Jim

Assuming this is for a MK6 GTI based on your sig...

Your vehicle is fitted with a Timing chain not a Belt. Did the engine re-start roughly? It also depends what faults are in the memory...did the Dealership say?

What year is your car?

See here for some recent Tensioner Shockers:

A search in the mk6 section with my username and the search term" tensioner " should bring the many threads up sadly.

If it had gone really badly wrong would I still be able to start it and it drive?

If it is it guess I should fight the costs as it's only done 32k miles with full VWSH

Yes as the stupid ecu programming  alters the camshaft timing to try and get or keep the car running. :lipsrsealed:

Thanks mate, we'll with 32k on the clock they can whistle if they want me to pay!

No way a modern car should have this issue with so few miles!!

Thanks mate,

Another one bites the dust!!

If this IS and it's failed whilst driving then I think VW need to change their tune!

Before I start refusing to pay them a penny, am I right in saying that this simply should never happen on a car with so few miles for its age?

What is a reasonable cost for me to pay? Anything? All of it?

All advice is appreciated.

It all depends what it is.
If the chains jumped a tooth during the car running there could be a few reasons.
. Its been known for the chain to rub the case and ware.
. Low oil level or presure therefore the tensioner does not fully tension.
. Oil leak on the tensioner causing low pressure.
. Theres a fine mesh filter in the oil feed to the tensioner this can become sludged up causing the tensioner to not fully tension as the oil presure to it is low.

As ive said many times im not a fan of the way they have done this design. An old mechanical spring tensioner and a secondary oil fed one would have been a better design as would have using better deeper teeth design on the cogs and a better chain.
Its all cost and it looks like the mk7 uses a similar design. This is why ive rulled out any more EA888 Engined cars in my future.

It may not even be the cam chain tensioner in this case.
