VW have called me and said that they will need to replace the timing chain. VW will pay 100% for all the parts which he claims is over £1k as there are quite a few parts that will need replacing.

They have advised that the job will take 8 hours, I called an authorised VW workshop and they advise the system has that job down as a 3 hour job (2.7 hours)

The total cost is £756, I've told them I can't pay that and they are going to come back to me.

So is the 8 hours incorrect and is this a cost that I'm just going to have to suck up?

Cheers guys,

Jim

you have done well to get an initial quote for 8 hours, if they are going to come back with an improved offer that would be a good result.

But halfway through writing this i remember you say it was under 40k on the clock, so in fact it should still be under warranty- I would push for at least 50% labour.

Why would it still be under warranty mate? The car is an 09 plate.

Thanks,

Jim

The dealer has come back to me and advised they will cover 50% of the labour and VW 100% of the parts! all in all I think that's a fair compromise.

Thanks for all the advice guys,

Jim

My bad, missed that. Can you save your quote and invoice, it will help whoever's goes pop next. If the dealers can start to get some consistency on the final price it would be nice.

I wonder if they check the ECU for evidence of mapping before they offer any good will payments, or if anyone that's had good will for this repair has had an unchecked mapped car.

Afetr another cold start this morning, I defo know mine is on the way out, just sounds to rattly for the first 3-5 seconds. I wish VW would have it in and fix before it goes bang.

Pre emptive action must make sense for VW. I guess the dealer won't commit to take it on unless they are guaranteed that they will be reimbursed by VW, or you.

I was sure mine got noisier and 'less convincing' in the week leading up to the failure.
