Front Assist Not Working?
« on: 31 October 2013, 19:12 »
I'm wondering if I have a fault or I am just dim. Picked up my GTI last Friday, and I still can't get the smile off of my face.  I am using adaptive cruise control around the country lanes of Dorset with great success, but have yet to see Front Assist show any signs of working. I have made sure it is active, and ticked all the options, I've switched off the ACC and driven up close to cars in front, but no warning signs appear on the display, and no auto braking takes place.  Any advice would be greatly received.

Well I wouldn't try too hard if I were you.
If you want to know it's working try pulling up towards someone at a decent speed ( I don't mean careering towards them like a missile) on a dual carriageway or suchlike and looking for the two cars and exclamation mark in the MFD.
If the radar thinks you don't have braking space this warning will come up.

Very difficult to test. You'd need a friend driving in front, an open road and very strong nerves.

Wouldn't recommend it. The few times it's activated for me has been when the car in front has slowed down but I haven't quite as quickly. I think it's only active if you don't have your foot on the brake.

Thanks for the response and I fully understand the need for caution at speed. But part of the function is the city emergency brake function.  This afternoon whilst in Dorchester I crept forward to within two feet of the stationary car in front at a speed showing of 4mph, and still no braking or warning display. Surely something other than the ParkPilot should have intervened?

Does it work with stationary objects?

Not knowing the exact circumstances and what you were doing makes it difficult.
I've had it go off 3 times
1st time someone pulled off left in front and the car thought I was approaching too fast as it slowed down.I didn't brake but didn't need to.Got a warning.
2nd time I rolled onto a roundabout and a car drove across my front ,right to left.Again I didn't brake but did not need to.Got a warning.
3rd time a car pulled sharply right on the approach to a roundabout (changed lanes right in front of me) this time it applied the brakes sharply as well as the warning.
I think if you are actively controlling the car, possibly feathering the brakes or some other positive change in input perhaps the car assumes you know what is going on in all but the most extreme cases.

I think the best course of action is to just forget about it, and get back to the habit of driving normally. I'm sure a situation will arise in the future which will show whether it is working or not.

^^^ agree with this, picked up my GTD earlier this week and was thnking I haven't seen any signs of this (aside from the first warning picture in the instrument display).
Think of it like an airbag - just trust they are there when you need them, but don't try to set them off

Waiting for the first pic of a front end collision GTI/GTD and the statement – “mine doesn’t work, tried it with my mate driving in front of me”
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Hi,

Im a bit confused.  Active cruise control i did not appear to be an option when I ordered my GTI in late October? Is it then?

Thanks

Ian
