Fog Light wires/Door. info needed

Hi guys,

been a member on here for a while but never really utilized the site much, until now!

I purchased an 8v a while back which has had a vento front end converstion, when I inspected the fogs however I found that the clever clogs I brought it off had been driving around with the fogs not being connected (just so she still looked pretty by my guess) I was wondering if anyone could shed any light (no pun intended) on a few things.

1. would he have wired in the lights to the vento main lights
2. would a GTI (8v) come with fogs as standard (K reg' = 1990)
3. WHAT COLOUR WIRES AM I LOOKING FOR (there are a few knocking around with no female end connectors on so I may have to nab some first, tried a Haynes manual to find the colours but it confused the fudge out of me)

Second thing

My door leaks like beggary! on the inside of the door card, by the looks of things its been going on for a while! removed all the carpets and seats all the way to the bulk head (mainly to put my VR6 interior in) and hung up to dry/clean.
I've brought some plastic to replace the membrane that should be there but before doing it I wanted to ask.

1. how much should the seal actually leak into the door? and is there any tips you can provide to limit the water coming in.
2. what is the best stuff to stick the membrane on with.
and any tips you can give to get the membrane to seal properly.

any mk3 will have the wires from the light switch to the front connector in the engine bay wiring harness, but fogs were never standard iirc - you're talking about VWs here, the options list has always been longer than a roll of bog paper.

you'll need the light switch with fogs and then just need to connect the fogs in the engine bay to the wiring harness connector that sits above the radiator (all wiring from the light switch to there is already in every mk3). all you need is a male spade connector, think 4.8mm wide, crimp that to a 2.5mm2 wire, this goes to pin 5 in the harness connector.

from there you can split the 2.5mm2 line to 2 x 1.5 (1.0 will do as well) and go to the fog lights, second wire on fogs you can hook up to another 2.5mm2 and go straight to negative battery terminal.


don't cut the wire before the wiring harness and dodge it together... you'll never get loom right again.

what do you mean you got water coming in from door?? even without a membrane you shouldn't get too much water in. a bit yes, but not streams unless there is torrential rain and you're in a river.

but does not help if there's no membrane, so as a first step try that. to fit it i would use something like '3M 8008 super weatherstrip adhesive' (it's a rubbery kind of glue that is flexible and will stick quite well to metal and not dissolve or degrade membrane). would advise against silicone since acid it releases on cure will cause corrosion and make plastic of the membrane brittle. so won't doing you any favors.

Re: the water issue, Its sitting on the seal at the base of the window, and running down into the door, it drips off the end of the guides for when you put the window up and down and splashes my wiring for central locking/wingmirrors ect then sits on door seal and eventually fills my footwell with a considerable amount of water, I try'd the other night to attach some plastic to keep it out and tbh it was a lot better, im just concerned that too much water is getting in.

I'm also wondering how hard is it to install all the loom work and components for the heated seats I have on my VR6 interior, would be sweet to have them going this winter, had the seats for nearly 5 years now and never really bothered to get them working.

Also have you any idea if its possibly to run off an
amp 110w
sub (800w max and 250W rms 4 ohm)
6x9's (420w max 140rms min input 70rms)
(I will be running 2 other sets of door speakers front and back but straight off the head unit if this makes any difference, don't think it should though)

installing heated seats and loom can be done, not too much trouble.

door water issue, so it's running down the window seal? then would replace that.
the door membrane can't hold that much water in forever (neither would you want that much in the door!)

next problem is a tiny bit more serious,
had a few "jerks/lurches" when driving the other day so took her to the garage for a check up, tbh to begin with I thought it was the engine mounts that had worn away, but the worst diagnosis was given gearbox has been shredded!!!
So my questions are as follows
1. is there any point in trying to revive it with a new gearbox,
2. if so: where is a cheap place to buy a new gearbox/secondhand/refurb (but good quality... I know those too words rarely go well together).
3. is it worth replacing the clutch at the same time.

what exactly is gone in the gearbox?
bearings, gears, ... ?

depends how much you wanna spend, box from ebay can work for a while, or from dismantler...
if you wanna have more peace of mind go for a refurbed box. they might take yours in exchange.

when the gearbox is off i would replace the clutch at the same time, unless its not done a lot of miles.
if it was the original clutch from the factory replace it - additional cost is pretty much only parts. won't take more than 1h extra to change the clutch when box is off already.

they said that its really past repair at the garage, A tooth was missing off reverse for a while and knew that it was on its way out, and have a feeling it could be down to that + wear and tear over the years.
Is there any place you can recommend for buying a refurb gearbox, and what kind of clutch stuff need to buy. also is there anywhere online I can find out the engine codes for the vehicle. cheers again for all your help!

In regards to the original topic of the post,,, Re fog lights.
I opened up the plug but unfortunately the plug has no pin in position 5, does this mean that the car didn't come with fogs as standard? and how will I work around this problem?

there's two side to the plug, if the car was not fitted with fogs you won't have the male spade on one side, female counterpart should be there always - even if no fogs fitted ever
