Mis fire

Hi guys, just a puzzle qeustion. My car has stood for a while, 3 week may be and when i started it, it wasnt running on al 4. It sounds like a Subaru......I took it to the mechanic yesterday with its mis fire, and he just cant seems to find the fualt,,,,he said its not showing a mis fire or any errors. thew coil packs seems bit wet.....oil or something

Any ideas guys?

Sounds to me like a coilpack has gone, ring VW to see if your are eligible for a recall - in most cases if your car hasn't already had it they will replace them all foc.

The oil could be the inner valve cover gasket leaking.

If the sig is correct he has an AGU so there won't be a coilpack recall (That was for the later engines)

My first thought would be the ignition amplifier that is bolted to the back of the airbox. These are known to go on the AGU engines and cause misfires (In the later engine this part was integrated into the actual coil packs hence them failing and the recall)

There is a very small chance that it could be a coilpack however the genuine ones are rock solid on that engine. Test by doing the following

1. Start car
2. In turn remove and replace the coil pack connectors
3. When the engine note doesn't change you have found the offending cylinder.
4. Turn off car and swap the coil pack of the non-working cylinder and a working cylinder
5. Restart car. Repeat step 2 and 3. If the misfire has followed the coil pack then it is that. If it is still on the same cylinder you need to check other items

Oil on the coil pack could just mean that your cylinder head cover gasket needs replacing. Can you see oil down the side wall when you remove the coil packs?

you can test the ignition module with a battery and a multimeter. I'll try to find the link on how to do it

Oh and Jin is most likely right, the ignition module won't throw any fault codes

Hi guys, before i go spend a lot of money.....the mechanic checked the car and reported the following.

Cylinder 3 has no spark

they have change the spark plug, changed coil packs over from cylinder one to cylinder three and the same result. There is compression and the smell of fuel indicates that the jets are working..

so the thoughts are as mentioned above that the ignition amplifier is playing up but at £172 from VW..i would like to get yout thoughts on the issue.
